Navy women roll to title in Navy Classic

La Salle was forced to reckon with a Sophie Gatzounas wearing a hard-hat on her head and a hammer in hand, already building an impressive season in which she’s set new season highs — and as Sunday showed — just as respectabl­e numbers.

Gatzounas followed up Saturday’s showstoppi­ng performanc­e with another double double Sunday of 15 points and 10 rebounds to boost the host Midshipmen to the crown in the Navy Classic championsh­ip game, 61-46, over the Explorers.

It was the third straight victory for Navy (5-3), which has just three nonconfere­nce games left before opening Patriot League play in January.

“This is huge for us. We feel really good as a team right now, coming off three wins,” Gatzounas said. “It gives us confidence going forward. We’ve got Patriot League on the radar, but we’ve got some non-conference games to take care of first.”

Kennesaw State 59, UMBC 44: Alexis Poole led all scorers with 21 points and13 rebounds and Amani Johnson added 15 points to lead the Owls (5-3) over the Retrievers at the Navy Classic.

Te’yJah Oliver led UMBC (2-6) with 18 points, while Janee’a Summers posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

George Washington 54, Coppin State 35: Kayla Mokwuah scored 10 points to help the host Colonials (4-3) over the Eagles (0-7).

Marley Grenway and Jalynda Salley each scored nine points for Coppin, which shot 28.9% from the field and was held to under 40 points for the second time this season.

Michigan 80, MorganStat­e48: Akienreh Johnson and Michelle Sidor each scored 16 points to lift the host Wolverines (6-1) over the Bears (3-5).

Dahnye Redd scored 16 points and Chelsea Mitchell added 10 points and five rebounds for Morgan, which shot 32.7% from the field. Michigan shot 55.8% overall and 45.5% (5-for-11) from 3-point range.

Men

Loyola Maryland 77, Binghamton 65: Andrew Kostecka finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals and the Greyhounds dominated the first half and breezed to a victory over the Bearcats.

Kostecka made just four of 13 shots from the field for Loyola (4-4), but he went 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. KaVaughn Scott finished with 14 points and six boards. Golden Dike came off the bench to score 12 on 5-of-7 shooting, while Came Spencer pitched in with 11 points and five assists.

Fordham 66, UMES45: Chuba Ohams tallied 18 points and11rebou­nds to lift the host Rams to a 66-45 win over the Hawks.

Jalen Cobb had nine points and six rebounds for Fordham (5-2), .

Towson at Cornell: The Big Red canceled its home game Sunday because of inclement weather. It has not been determined if the game will be made up.
