Newton to have foot surgery

-

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will have surgery on his injured left foot next week, interim coach Perry Fewell said on Wednesday.

Newton suffered a Lisfranc injury in the preseason and started two games in the regular season before being placed on injured reserve.

Fewell said he had no other details about the procedure or how long it will take for Newton to recover.

The Panthers must make a decision on Newton’s future after the season. Newton will cost $21.2 million under the salary cap next season, but the team can save $19 million by trading or releasing him.

Owner David Tepper says the team will wait to see how Newton recovers before making any decisions about his future.

Fewell also said Kyle Allen will continue to start Sunday when the Panthers visit the Falcons. The Falcons beat the Panthers 29-3 last month and Allen threw four interceptions and was sacked five times. Allen is 5-5 this season as the team’s starter and his backup is third-round draft pick Will Grier.

Manning likely back as starter: Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was kept out of practice Wednesday with a high right ankle sprain, and coach Pat Shurmur says Eli Manning “very likely” will start Monday night against the Eagles.

Shurmur adds that Manning could very well be the starter for the rest of the season. The rookie Jones has been the starter since the third game of the season, which Giants won 32-31 at Tampa Bay. They beat the Redskins the next week and have lost eight straight games since. The first-round draft pick has completed 61% of his passes (228 of 370) for 2,374 yards and 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

Jones stood on the sideline Wednesday wearing a boot on his right foot. Manning, the team’s starter since 2004, started for the first two games this season, completing 56 of 89 passes for 556 yards and two TDs with two interceptions.

Mayfield fighting through: Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is still dealing with an injury to his right throwing hand.

Mayfield, who hurt his hand in the first half of Sunday’s loss against the Steelers, didn’t throw a pass during the 20 minutes of Wednesday’s practice open to reporters. Mayfield’s hand and thumb were heavily wrapped as he watched backup Garrett Gilbert and practice squad QB Eric Dungey toss passes.

Before practice, coach Freddie Kitchens twice said Mayfield wouldn’t be limited.

Mayfield bruised his hand when he struck it on Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree’s facemask while attempting a long pass just before halftime. X-rays were negative and Mayfield played the second half while wearing a glove.

Extra points: The Colts claimed K Chase McLaughlin off waivers amid Adam Vinatieri’s continuing struggles. McLaughlin, a rookie from Illinois, has appeared in four games with the Chargers and three with the 49ers this seaoson. He’s made 13 of 17 field goals and all 15 extra points. Vinatieri, 46, meanwhile, has had one of the worst seasons of his career. He’s missed 14 kicks — eight field goals and six extra points. And he missed three field goals in last weekend’s 31-17 loss to the division rival Titans. The Colts made room for McLaughlin by waiving TE Matt Lengel. ... Four-time Pro Bowl G Josh Sitton is retiring as a member of the Packers. Sitton, who was drafted by the Packers in the fourth round in 2008 and played eight seasons with the team. Sitton started 112 of 121 regular-season games with the Packers, including 13 postseason games. ... Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy and his former girlfriend have reached a settlement in a lawsuit she filed against him, court records show. Delicia Cordon filed the lawsuit last year accusing McCoy of failing to protect her from a violent July 2018 home invasion at a home he owns in Milton, Ga., just outside Atlanta. Cordon was bloodied and beaten, and $133,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from the home.
