Winborne leads the way for Gilman

- By Kyle J. Andrews

Gilman tipped off its Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference schedule Wednesday with a 48-43 victory over Boys’ Latin.

Sophomore guard Christian Winborne led the Greyhounds with16 points, six rebounds and a steal. Winborne’s ability to slash and make the 3-point shot (three 3-pointers) made for a strong performance, driving his teammates to perform with intensity.

“It’s very important because when one of our teammates has energy, that transfers to all of our teammates,” Winborne said. “We just feed off of each other and that’s when we start playing our best basketball.”

The Greyhounds led the majority of the game but fell into trouble in the fourth quarter.

In the beginning of the matchup, Gilman’s Jalen Marshall led the way with seven points for a 12-6 lead in the first quarter. Boys’ Latin’s Tre’ Green had four points.

At the half, Marshall had nine points to lead all scorers, with Boys’ Latin’s Will Spencer scoring five. Spencer soon made his mark in the second half, adding an additional nine points and cutting Gilman’s lead to just four, 35-31, in the third period.

Things began to get dicey for Gilman, as Boys’ Latin’s Michael Austin tied the game with two free throws at 40-40 with just 2 minutes, 34 seconds remaining. But the Greyhounds scored two quick buckets before the Lakers got a clutch 3-pointer from Kendall Walker.

Junior Rayaun Lane drove to the basket, giving Gilman a 46-43 lead.

John Carroll 82, Mount Carmel 72: Jaiden Jakubowski scored 21 points and Jalen Bryant had 19 points to lead the host Patriots (4-0, 1-0 MIAA A Red Division) beat the Cougars (3-1, 0-1).

Calvert Hall 67, Gerstell 52: The visiting Cardinals (1-2, 1-0 MIAA A Conference) took a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and beat the Falcons (2-5, 0-2).
