Murphy takes over in OT, leads Franklin boys past Milford Mill

Truitt hits crucial 3-pointer to help defeat the Millers

Ben Murphy scored seven of his team’s 11 points in overtime to lead visiting Franklin over Milford Mill, 72-69, in boys basketball on Wednesday.

Murphy finished with 25 points and Reggie Truitt made a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 61 and force overtime.

“The game was intense,” Franklin coach Dave Iampieri said. “We had three players foul out and started using guys like Reggie Truitt late in the game who hadn’t played alot.”

“When their big man [Jalen Parker] got into foul trouble, we were able to score more inside,” he added.

Franklin took its first lead, 41-40, in the third quarter and led by two to start the fourth quarter.

No. 1 St. Frances 69, No. 13 Loyola Blakefield 54: The host Panthers (32-3, 17-1 Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n AConferenc­e Red Division) racked up their 11th straight win. The Dons fell to 17-11, 10-8.

No. 3 Mount Saint Joseph 69, St. Maria Goretti 39: Mount Saint Joseph (24-4) took a 34-15 lead at the half and rolled past Goretti (10-9).

Archbishop Curley 55, St. Paul’s 25: The host Friars (20-6, 11-2 MIAA B Conference) beat the Crusaders (7-20, 1-12). It was the11th straight loss for St. Paul’s.

Boys’ Latin 67, Annapolis Area Christian 62: Lorenzo Donadio scored 20 points to lead the visiting Lakers (13-12, 10-8 MIAA A Conference Black Division) over the Eagles (7-18, 3-15). The victory was the second straight and Boys’ Latin travels to Gerstell on Friday at 6 p.m.

Indian Creek 49, Friends 43: The host

Eagles (8-13, 4-9 MIAA B Conference) won and halted a four-game winning streak by the Quakers (16-9, 9-4).

St. John’s Catholic Prep 75, Severn 47: The host Vikings (17-11, 10-3 MIAA B Conference) have won three in a row. The Admirals fell to 9-15, 6-7.

Gilman 70, McDonogh 54: The visiting Greyhounds (16-8, 13-5 MIAA A Conference Black Division), who already secured the top-seed in the league playoffs, claimed their fifth straight win, beating the Eagles (15-17, 9-10).

St. Vincent Pallotti 55, Gerstell 51: Wade Jackson had 13 points to lead the visiting Panthers (16-13, 9-9 MIAA A Conference Black Division), who halted a three-game losing streak. The Falcons fell to 7-22, 0-18.

Northeast 61, Arundel 58: Quaddir Spence led the visiting Wildcats (11-9) with 16 points. The host Eagles improved to 14-4.

Girls basketball

No. 14 Pikesville 44, Catonsvill­e 38: The visiting Panthers (16-4) went on a19-5 run in the third quarter to take control and beat the Comets (12-7). Charia Roberts led Pikesville with 17 points and Ashley Dickey had 11 points for Catonsvill­e. The Comets led 24-14 in the first half.

Towson 57, Parkville 33: Ava Marsiglia scored 17 points to lead the host Generals (12-6) past the Knights (7-10).

Western Tech 52, Hereford 46: Sophomore Destini Ward scored 20 points and had seven rebounds and four steals and senior Tiffany Manning scored 15 points to lead the Wolverines (15-3) to a win over the Bulls (12-4). Western Tech trailed 46-37 with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter and closed the game with a 15-0 run. Reese Harden led Hereford with a game-high 21 points.

Arundel 84, Northeast 48: Heather Middleton scored 19 points to lead the visiting Wildcats (15-5) over the Eagles (5-13).

Wrestling

Annapolis 33, South River 32: When Annapolis pulled off its first feat it hadn’t accomplish­ed in 18 years earlier in the regular season, that was a warning shot.

The Panthers were ready to bring 2002 back in style.

Thanks to a rally victory by 106-pound Kevin Van Besien, No. 3 seed Annapolis will travel to its first 4A state dual appearance in almost two decades, upsetting No. 1 South River, 33-32, In the 4A East region duals finals on Wednesday night.

Chesapeake-AA 58, Huntingtow­n 12: Chesapeake entered Wednesday night’s 3A South Region wrestling tournament as the top seed and after two dominating performanc­es, including a 58-12 region final win against No. 2 Huntingtow­n, the Cougars showed why they were representa­tive of that lofty moniker.

“We wrestled really well against Huntingtow­n, ” said Cougars coach Randy Curtin, whose 13-3 squad will travel to North Point High School Saturday to compete in the 3A state dual meet championsh­ip.

”We had a couple of swing matches go our way and we got pins; we got the bonus points.”

Heavyweigh­t Ron McDuffie opened the championsh­ip match with a pin with four seconds left in the opening period for a 6-0 Chesapeake lead the Cougars would never relinquish en route to the program’s first region dual meet title since 2004.

”This was our best case scenario,” said Curtin of his team’s championsh­ip performanc­e. ”We’ll see who we face (at States). We’ll see some tough teams.”
