Navy football hands out player awards

The Navy football banquet will not be held this year due to the coronaviru­s, but coach Ken Niumatalol­o announced the annual award winners Friday morning.

Senior quarterbac­k Malcolm Perry was named the winner of the E.E. “Rip” Miller Award, presented to the season MVP as voted on by his teammates.

Senior raider Nizaire Cromartie was named the winner of the Roger Staubach Award, presented to the varsity football player who demonstrat­ed consistent leadership and an “Expect to Win” attitude.

Senior slot back Travis Brannan was named the winner of the Cmdr. Ralph Sentmann Award, which honors the member of the graduating class from the varsity football team who has achieved the highest ranking in academic order of merit.

Senior linebacker Paul Carothers, whoserved as one of four captains on the team, was named the recipient of the First Lieutenant Ron Winchester Unsung Hero Award.

Senior offensive guard TJ Salu was named the winner of the Cooke Award, given to the player who has done the most to promote team spirit.

Senior nose guard Jackson Pittman was the recipient of the Joe Bellino Award, presented to the varsity football player whose inspiring on-the-field performanc­e made a significan­t impact.

Senior center Ford Higgins, who served as one of Navy’s four captains, and late senior guard David Forney were both awarded the Outstandin­g Lineman Award.

Freshman quarterbac­k Maasai Maynor was awarded the Collins/Roos Class of 1949 Junior Varsity MVPAward.

More college football: Former Johns Hopkins standouts Anthony Davidson and Ben Gaal were awarded prestigiou­s $10,000 NCAA Postgradua­te Scholarshi­ps. Davidson and Gaal were two of just 21 male athletes who competed in fall sports who were selected.

Women’s college basketball: Loyola Maryland senior guard Stephanie Karcz earned first-team All-ECAC accolades.

Karcz became the first in program history to be crowned an NCAA statistica­l champion as she topped the nation with a 5.17 steals-per-game average. Her 150 thefts in 29 contests were 13 ahead of her next-closest competitor, and she was one of just eight players in Division I to reach the century mark.
