Jack White to the ‘SNL’ rescue

- Tribune news services

NEW YORK — Jack White will be the lastminute replacement musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” after country singer Morgan Wallen was dropped for breaking COVID-19 protocols.

Wallen was removed as musical guest Thursday after TikTok videos showed him partying last weekend without a mask among a large group of people. Lorne Michaels announced White as a fill-in Friday on the “Today” show.

“Calling somebody on a Thursday to be here for Friday, it’s complicated,” Michaels said. “It has to be people who are ready to go. And he’s always good on the show.”

Wallen apologized for what he called his “pretty shortsighted” actions Thursday. “I respect the show’s decision because I know that I put them in jeopardy and I take ownership for this,” the 27-yearold said.

Michaels said the show will invite Wallen again in the future.

“Saturday Night Live,” which will be hosted Saturday by comedian Bill Burr, resumed live instudio shows last weekend with a smaller live audience. Guests were required to take a COVID-19 test and temperature check at arrival, and wear masks inside the building.

Broadway shutdown extended:

Fans of Broadway will have to wait a little longer for shows to resume — until at least late May. Although an exact date for performances to resume has yet to be determined, Broadway producers are now offering refunds and exchanges for tickets purchased for shows through May 30.

Broadway theaters abruptly closed March 12. Producers, citing health

and city authorities, previously extended the shutdown to June 7, then again to Sept. 6 and again to Jan. 3.

The new timeframe may complicate shows that had planned to open in the spring, including “MJ,” “The Music Man,” “Flying Over Sunset,” “Caroline or Change,” “Plaza Suite,” “American Buffalo” and “The Minutes.”
