Teen accused of killing man trying to break up fight

Baltimore police arrested a teenager Wednesday for the April 25 shooting of Marco Nunez, who officials said was trying to break up a fight around 1 a.m. outside Fells Point bars when gunfire left him dead.

The shooting unfolded in the 1700 block of Thames Street, a waterside strip that is home to numerous bars and restaurants. Nunez, 30, later died in the hospital. Police have released few details about the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting, saying only that Nunez tried to break up an altercation.

The day after the homicide, police released photos of people they wanted to question about the shooting, and Gov. Larry Hogan doubled the reward money for information leading to an arrest.

In announcing the arrest Wednesday, police thanked the public for their help.

“Homicide detectives are adamant about the fact that they would not have been able to solve this case [without] cooperation of members of the community,” said Det. Donny Moses, a Baltimore police spokesman.

He said detectives interviewed witnesses and obtained an arrest warrant.

The suspect, a 16-year-old whom police did not name, was arrested Wednesday in the 900 block of Cherry Hill Road, officials said.

After questioning, the teen will be charged with first-degree murder, according to police.

This marks the second recent arrest of a teenager charged with homicide in Baltimore. A 17-year-old was arrested last week and accused of killing Daniel Pitts, 52, during a road rage incident on Pennington Avenue south of Curtis Bay.

And on Tuesday evening, a 16-year-old suspect was arrested alongside an adult in the carjacking of a Baltimore police detective outside a Cherry Hill convenience store.
