The Century girls lacrosse team had been in this position before, leading Glenelg late with a spot in the state quarterfinals on the line. The Knights calmly worked the ball around, maintaining possession in the game’s final 2:20, fending off double teams.

Jasmine Stanton and Lauren and Anna Hackett successfully evaded Glenelg’s defenders, running out the clock in the No. 4 Knights’ nail-biting 8-7 victory over No. 3 Glenelg for the Class 2A West Region I championship on Tuesday. Both top-seeded Century and second-seeded Glenelg entered the game unbeaten.

It’s the second straight year Century has defeated Glenelg in the regional championship game, winning 10-8 a season ago.

“I’m so proud of them because, obviously, last year we had one and it’s even harder to beat [Glenelg] the second time when they’re prepared for you,” Century coach Becky Groves said. “I knew it would be even more of a battle, which it was.”

Anna Hackett scored four goals to lead the Knights, who advance to the 2A state quarterfinals, where they earned the No. 1 seed and hosted No. 8 Northeast Wednesday night in a game that ended too late for this edition.

“[Iannarino is] a young kid who’s really grown into his own this year,” Glenelg coach Josh Hatmaker said. “He works hard every single day. I’m extremely happy for him and that’s a tribute to him. He sees every day as a challenge and he goes out and meets it. That’s the fruits of his labors.”

North County 12, Old Mill 0: In high school baseball, a deep pitching staff will usually get you far into the playoffs.

That fact held true Tuesday as North

County’s Thor Hildebrand hurled a five-inning one-hitter to lead No. 2 seed North County over fifth-seeded Old Mill, 12-0, to win the Class 4A East Region I championship.

Bel Air 4, C. Milton Wright 1: Bel Air used strong pitching and timely hitting Tuesday to win the Class 3A North Region II title.

Pitchers Jack Snyder and Aiden Hankins limited visiting C. Milton Wright to one run on six hits in a 4-1 Bobcats win. The senior scattered five hits, walked two and yielded the lone CMW run, while striking out five over four innings.

— Randy McRoberts, Baltimore Sun Media South Carroll 6, Pikesville 4: In playoff baseball, the smallest margin can make the biggest difference.

If Brian Wilder Jr.’s fifth-inning line drive was a foot further to the left, or just a few inches higher, the Pikesville Panthers likely tie South Carroll in their Class 1A North Region I final. Instead, Wilder’s shot was just in the range of Cavaliers shortstop Braden Green, whose lunging catch maintained the lead.

“That was a smoked line drive, I barely got there,” Green said.

Sophomore relief pitcher Braden Cordrey kept the Panthers at bay in the final two innings as South Carroll claimed the regional championship, 6-4.

The Lions banged out 10 hits in a 12-run second inning to overwhelm Century, 15-2, to win the regional title.
