The Hereford boys lacrosse team found a different way to beat Glenelg in the Class 2A state tournament Wednesday — no comeback or late-game heroics necessary this time.

The No. 14 Bulls scored the first seven goals and gave little ground through four quarters, pulling away for a convincing 14-3 win over the visiting Gladiators in the quarterfinal round.

The 2A state champion after rallying for a 13-12 semifinal win over the Gladiators last season, this year’s Bulls (13-3) are making their 17th semifinal appearance and looking to add to the program’s 13 titles. They will take on Kent Island in the semifinals Friday at Wheaton at 8 p.m.

James Traynor scored on his first two shots two minutes into the game and finished the first quarter with three goals. JP Revitte added two goals and two assists, faceoff specialists Matthew Daw and Cole Wallner picked up key wins and a defense led by Austin Clarke rarely budged.

Hereford coach Kyle Leppert has been urging his Bulls to give him a full four-quarter effort and they’ve come close plenty of times this season. On Wednesday, they no doubt delivered.

“We had a solid first quarter to kind of set the precedent for the game and we feel like we haven’t really played a full good game as well as we could, and that’s what we wanted to come out and do,” Traynor said. “We know they’re a really good team, so I feel that’s really going to set us up well to continue our playoff run. Definitely a good night for us.”

Urbana 15, North County 6: North County boys lacrosse made history on Tuesday under a bright blue sky. On Wednesday, dark clouds rolled in.

No. 5 seed Urbana conquered the Class 4A state quarterfinal within a few minutes and levied a heavy early advantage to beat fourth-seeded North County, 15-6, in a physical contest.

“It’s not what we wanted,” North County coach Dennis Sullivan said, “but we’re just happy to be here.”

Clevenger scored two goals in the first half, including the opening goal of the game. She scored her second on a goal that went under the goalie’s legs with 8:01 remaining. Clevenger added three more goals in the second half, her fifth coming with 3:17 left and sealed the game.

Century 23, Northeast 0: If motivation is an indicator of performance, then the Century Knights are right where they need to be.

“We really didn’t know what to expect because we’ve never played them,” Little, a senior, said. “We just knew we had to come out with intensity, and that’s exactly what happened.

South Carroll 7, Liberty 3: Wednesday’s Class 1A North Region I softball final between South Carroll and Liberty was an emotional roller coaster. Each side had its ups and downs as the lead went back and forth.

Through it all, the visiting Cavaliers never wavered, staying just as upbeat when they were behind as they were in front.

When the final fly ball began dropping toward shortstop Hailey Wolfrey’s glove, the emotions were ready to hit another level.

“I was like, ‘We got it in the bag. I got this pop up. It’s over,’ ” she said.

Wolfrey secured the final out in South Carroll’s 7-3 win over Liberty, setting off a team celebration.

“I’m just ecstatic,” Wolfrey said. “Last year we won regionals. I think doing it again is hard, and we pulled it off.”
