Angels:

The Anaheim City Council has voted to cancel the sale of Angel Stadium to Angels owner Arte Moreno amid a political scandal that led the mayor to resign. The unanimous vote Tuesday directed the city attorney to void a 2020 agreement to sell the city-owned ballpark and 151 acres as part of a plan to develop the land around it. “The vote follows the May 16 notice of a federal investigation into former mayor Harry Sidhu stemming from actions he may have taken related to the stadium site proposal,” the city said in a statement.

Yankees: JP Sears pitched five poised innings to win his first career start and the no-name relievers left in Yankees’ banged-up bullpen finished a five-hitter as the Yankees beat the visiting Orioles 2-0 on Wednesday. Aaron Judge doubled and scored on a single by Miguel Andújar — his first RBI in the big leagues this season. The Yankees added a second run in the fourth on a throwing error by prized rookie catcher Adley Rutschman. Fill-in closer Clay Holmes struck out Jorge Mateo with runners at the corners to end it. Before the game, the ailing Yankees placed slugger Giancarlo Stanton (strained right calf ) and reliever Jonathan Loáisiga (shoulder inflammation) on the IL — the latest in a string of prominent players rendered unavailable over the past five days. The Yankees took two of three in the series and boast the best record in baseball at 31-13 heading into their first matchup this season with the AL East rival Rays. Sears (2-0) worked around a leadoff walk and an error in the first, then pitched out of trouble again in the second. The 26-year-old lefty, recalled from Triple A before the game, allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five in a spot start after last Friday’s rainout forced a doubleheader

Sunday. Rookie RHP Ron Marinaccio struck out three in two perfect innings. Lucas Luetge got two outs in the eighth and Miguel Castro fanned Austin Hays with a runner on to end the inning. Holmes, subbing for injured closer Aroldis Chapman, gave up two hits in the ninth before securing his fifth save. Holmes threw 14 of 15 pitches for strikes and extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings.

Braves: Dansby Swanson scored the tiebreaking run in the fifth on an excruciating defensive sequence by the Phillies, and the host Braves went on to earn an 8-4 victory. Swanson, who went 4-for-5, connected with his sixth HR, an opposite-field shot to right, for a 7-4 lead in the sixth. He also added an RBI single in the four-run second. OF Ronald Acuña Jr. was scratched from the lineup shortly before the game with right quadriceps tightness. Acuña awoke feeling sore and tested out his leg by running on the field before deciding to skip the game. He’s hitting .292 with two HRs, eight RBIs and eight stolen bases in 65 at-bats since returning from reconstructive right knee surgery April 28. The two-time All-Star and 2018 NL rookie of the year missed five games recently with right groin tightness.

Extra innings: Evan Longoria homered twice and Joc Pederson hit his fourth in two games as the host Giants went deep four times in the first two innings off rookie Thomas Szapucki and routed the Mets 9-3. Mike Yastrzemski also homered off Szapucki, a 25-year-old lefty making his first major league start and second appearance. The Mets lost two of three against the Giants for just their second series loss in their first 14 this season.

... The Rockies placed OF Kris Bryant on the 10-day IL with back soreness. This is Bryant’s second stint on the IL this season due to back issues.
