At just 20, Kim wins PGA Tour event
Joohyung “Tom” Kim announced his arrival on the PGA Tour when the 20-yearold South Korean closed with a 9-under 61 for a five-shot victory in the Wyndham Championship on Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina, making him the second-youngest winner on tour since World War II.
A marathon day because of storm delays turned into a sprint for Kim. He finished the third round in the morning and was two shots behind, and then shot 27 on the front nine to leave the rest of the field in his wake. No one came close the rest of the way. The victory gave Kim instant membership on the PGA Tour, making him eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs that start next week. He’s No. 34, assured of playing two postseason events and with a reasonable shot at getting to the finale at East Lake.
Sungjae Im, who finished seven holes Sunday morning to take the 54-hole lead, had a 68 and tied for second along with John Huh (67).
Kim is the first PGA Tour winner born after 2000. Jordan Spieth was 19 when he won the John Deere Classic for his first tour win.
“I can’t believe it,” Kim said, and then adding with a laugh, “I didn’t know golf was his stressful.”
It sure didn’t look that way for Kim, who opened the tournament with a quadruple-bogey 8, laughed it off and then finished the week at 20-under 260 at Sedgefield Country Club.
Callum Shinkwin claimed his second European tour title with a four-shot victory in the Cazoo Open in Newport, Wales. The Englishman shot 1-under 70 in the final round and finished at 12-under 272 overall at Celtic Manor, where he has now finished first, fourth and eighth in his last three visits. A late charge from Scotland’s Connor Syme (68) secured second place on 8 under. ... Jerry Kelly missed a chance to win in regulation at the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta. And then he made short work in overtime by making a 4-foot birdie putt to win. Kelly now has three wins this year on the PGA Tour Champions. That’s tied with Steven Alker for the most this year on the 50-and-older circuit. Kelly shot a 67, while runner-up John Huston had a 65.
NFL: Browns RB Kareem demanded a trade after the team denied his request for a long-term contract extension, holding himself out of team drills Friday and Saturday in protest, but rejoining Sunday. ESPN reported that the team denied Hunt’s request. The 27-year-old Hunt is in the final season of a two-year, $12 million extension signed in 2020. If the Cleveland-area native is on the active roster for all 17 games, he will earn $6.25 million this season.
Soccer: Erling Haaland scored twice on his Premier League debut as Manchester City opened its title defense with a 2-0 road win over West Ham. Haaland needed 35 minutes to open his City account from the penalty spot after being brought down by the goalkeeper, and then netted with a low finish in the 65th minute to double the lead. Haaland, 22, scored 86 goals in 89 games during his three seasons at Borussia Dortmund before opting to move to City, where his father Alfie played between 2000-03 . ... In Erik ten Hag’s debut as manager, host Manchester United suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Brighton.
