Georgia up to No. 2 in AP Top 25

Georgia moved up to No. 2 in the first Associated Press college football poll of the regular season, passing Ohio State, after the defending national champions dominated their opener.

Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 released Tuesday, receiving 44 of 63 firstplace votes from the media panel and 1,552 points.

The Bulldogs narrowed the gap on the Crimson Tide after beating Oregon 49-3 on Saturday. Georgia received 17 first-place votes.

Ohio State slipped to No. 3 and received two first-place votes. Michigan moved up four spots to No. 4.

Clemson dropped a spot to No. 5.

Florida debuted at No. 12 after its thrilling victory at home against Utah on Saturday night. The Utes slipped six spots to No. 13 after the loss.

The rest of the top 10 was Texas A&M at No. 6, followed by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Baylor and Southern California.

USC is in the top 10 for the first time since the final regular-season poll of 2017, when the Trojans were eighth.

Wake Forest announced that fifth-year QB Sam Hartman has been medically cleared to play in the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons’ trip to Vanderbilt this weekend after receiving treatment for a blood clot. The news came roughly a month since the school said Hartman would be out indefinite­ly due to what it described at the time only as a non-football medical issue. Hartman was ranked as one of the nation’s top QBs last season for a team that reached the ACC championsh­ip game . ... Former Kentucky and Baylor coach Guy Morriss died Monday night at age 71. Morriss coached Kentucky in 2001 and 2002 and then spent the next five seasons leading Baylor, going 27-54 with the two universiti­es. He later coached Division II Texas A&M-Commerce for four years. In 2016,

Morriss was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Morriss’ doctor said in 2017 that the Alzheimer’s likely was caused by Morriss’ playing career. He played offensive line for TCU and 15 NFL seasons with the Eagles and Patriots (1973-87), appearing in 229 games (including playoffs) and making 180 starts.

Basketball: The 76ers and free agent C Montrezl Harrell agreed to a two-year, $5.2 million contract, ESPN reported. Harrell, 28, was the league’s sixth man of the year for the 2019-20 season while playing for the Clippers under head coach Doc Rivers and assistant Sam Cassell, who are now with the 76ers . ... A day after sitting out with a sore knee, Giannis Antetokoun­mpo had 41 points and nine rebounds in just 27 minutes to lead Greece over Ukraine 99-79 in Milan. Greece, Slovenia and Serbia have already qualified for the 16-team knockout stage in Berlin, which begins Sept. 17.

Golf: Trevor Immelman used five of six captain’s picks on Presidents Cup rookies on Tuesday to fill out his Internatio­nal team decimated by defections to Saudifunde­d LIV Golf. The matches against the U.S. take place Sept. 22-25 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. Immelman picked Christiaan Bezuidenho­ut (South Africa), Cameron Davis (Australia), Si Woo Kim (South Korea), K.H. Lee (South Korea), Sebastian Munoz (Colombia) and Taylor Pendrith (Canada). Kim is the only player who has competed in the Presidents Cup. The Internatio­nal qualifiers are: Corey Conners (Canada), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), Adam Scott (Australia), Tom Kim (South Korea) and Sungjae Im (South Korea) and Mito Pereira (Chile). U.S. captain Davis Love III makes his six captain’s picks Wednesday. The U.S. qualifers are: Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau.
