US players step up in UCL openers

-

United States international Gio Reyna set up two goals and Borussia Dortmund opened its Champions League campaign with a convincing 3-0 home win over Copenhagen on Tuesday. Dortmund, the 1997 champion, failed to advance from the group stage last season. Reyna, 19, left, came on as a substitute midway through the first half and provided an immediate spark. Another U.S. player, midfielder Weston McKennie, scored for Juventus, which dropped its groupplay opener 2-1 to host Paris Saint-Germain. It was the third career Champions League goal for the 24-year-old McKennie. In other notable action, defending champ Real Madrid downed Celtic 3-0 in Glasgow, Scotland, but lost key striker Karim Benzema to an apparent knee injury in the first half. Also, Croatia forward Mislav Oršić scored in the 13th minute and Dinamo Zagreb held on for a surprising 1-0 home victory over 2020-21 champ Chelsea. Seven-time UCL winner AC Milan settled for a 1-1 draw at Salzburg, while Premier League power Manchester City rolled past host Sevilla 4-0.
