John Carroll defeats Curley, 4-2

- By Glenn Graham

John Carroll scored a fast goal and dominated stretches in the first minutes at Archbishop Curley, only to see the score tied at halftime on Wednesday.

Undeterred, the No. 3 Patriots did what they’ve done throughout this early season — create scoring opportunities and put enough away.

The visitors got a goal from Austin Hofmann two minutes into the second half to set the tone, and Cameron Tolson and Ryan Skandalis added tallies to help the Patriots claim a sturdy 4-2 win over the No. 4 Friars in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference play.

John Carroll, fresh off a 3-3 tie against No. 1 Calvert Hall on Friday, improves to 4-0-1 overall and in league play. The Patriots have outscored their five opponents by a 30-6 margin.

“Our front three, we all play together in club, we’re all best friends,” said Skandalis, an All-Metro first-team selection last year and captain. “Our chemistry is phenomenal and we’re all best friends outside of soccer, so it’s just a lot of fun up top putting passes together and finishing.”

The Friars, who fall to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in league play, got 12 saves from goalie Joe Yakim.

AACS 1, Indian Creek 0: Annapolis Area Christian School boys soccer cared little about its first week, marred by a tie and a loss. The energy the Eagles carried in those two close games gave coach Vaughn Ridings confidence that the same gritty play would drive AACS on Wednesday.

He wasn’t wrong.

AACS defenders hounded Indian Creek relentlessly, preventing any chance at a tying goal for a 1-0 win in rainy Crownsville. Senior center back Timmy Brophy scored the game’s only goal on a header in the first half.

At the center of that stalwart defense was a junior in a bright yellow goalkeeper’s kit who’d never previously started a conference game: Ryan Jones. The junior goaltender made seven saves, including the final stop of Indian Creek’s offense in the last 30 seconds, as well as a game-changing dive in the second half that prevented the hosts from tying on a penalty kick.

Marriotts Ridge 7, Howard 1:

Tied halfway

through the second period, Marriotts Ridge senior forward Natalie Freeman meandered around several defenders at the top of the circle.

Gaining separation, Freeman fired the shot past Howard goalie Allayna Martone for the Mustangs’ second goal of the evening. It started a string of six unanswered Mustang goals in their 7-1 season-opening victory.

Several of Marriotts Ridge’s goals were created off penalty corners, as Freeman efficiently operated at the top of the circle. The Penn State commit finished with two goals and three assists to spearhead the Mustangs’ offense.

“We have a lot of people that create a lot of movement,” Marriotts Ridge coach Molly Milani said. “We have 11 seniors. Our entire starting lineup, minus one, is senior leadership. Obviously, Natalie creates a lot of forward offensive momentum. When she gets her hands one inch free in the circle, she can put it on cage.

“Even just game awareness, she sees the field and really can find the openings to create space for other people, which I think is huge in this game.”

North Harford 3, Edgewood 2: North Harford pulled off an improbable five-set win Wednesday at Edgewood in an Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Susquehanna Division match.

The Hawks, down 2-1 and trailing 24-17 in the fourth set, rallied to win it, 31-29, and the deciding fifth, 15-12, for a victory in their season opener. The Hawks won the first set, 25-21, but Edgewood (2-1) won the next two, 25-16 and 25-17, respectively.

“Well, if I have to say with our team, the best thing we did in that was really motivate each other,” senior Isabella Singh said. “We really worked hard and pushed through, no matter how tired we were.”
