EPL calls off matches

The English Premier League postponed its round of matches as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, adding to the cancellati­on of high-profile golf, cricket and horse racing across a mourning Britain on Friday.

The top-flight soccer clubs held a meeting on Friday and said they wanted to “pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.”

“This is a tremendous­ly sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said.

The British government said it was at the discretion of individual sporting organizati­ons whether fixtures went ahead following the death of the queen on Thursday at the age of 96.

Cycling: Remco Evenepoel maintained his two-minute lead over Enric Mas after the 19th stage of the Spanish Vuelta with only one day of competitiv­e racing left. Mads Pedersen, the 2019 world champion, beat his fellow sprinters to claim the 138.3-kilometer (85.9-mile) ride to and from Talavera de la Reina in central Spain.

Golf: Without a top 10 since the Asia swing in early March, Jeongeun Lee6 posted her best score in nearly a year with a 9-under 63 that gave her a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Kroger Queen City Championsh­ip in Cincinnati. She was at 13-under 131, one ahead of Janet Lin, who had a 68.

NFL: GM Eric DeCosta said the Ravens and QB Lamar Jackson still haven’t agreed on a contract extension and will keep working on it after the season. Jackson had said Friday was his deadline for a new deal, and he’d be pausing talks after that with the season about to start . ... Packers WR Allen Lazard (ankle) didn’t practice this week and is unlikely to play in their season opener Sunday in Minnesota . ... Jets LT Duane Brown will miss the season opener against the Ravens with a shoulder injury that could sideline him for a few weeks. ... Titans S Amani Hooker agreed to terms on a multiyear contract extension. Terms were not announced.
