-

The Guardians’ Terry Francona and Mets’ Buck Showalter were named managers of the year on Tuesday night, improving the already sparkling resumes of both veteran baseball leaders.

Showalter is just the third person to win a fourth manager of the year award and the first to win with four different franchises. He won the American League honor with the Yankees in 1994, Rangers in 2004 and Orioles in 2014, and now the National League honor with the Mets.

The other four-time winners are Hall of Famers Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa.

Showalter, 66, led the Mets to the second-best regular season in franchise history, finishing with 101 wins, which was a 24-win improvement over 2021. They finished second in the NL East to the Braves, who rallied to win the division. The Mets lost to the Padres in the wildcard round.

Francona, 63, won the AL award for the third time in 10 seasons with the Guardians.

A two-time World Series winner with the Red Sox, the 2022 season with the may have been Francon’s best managing job.

Baseball’s youngest team, the Guardians unexpectedly won the AL Central. The Guardians then swept the Rays in the wild-card round before losing in five games to the Yankees in the AL Division Series.

NBA: Grizzlies G Desmond Bane has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprain of his right big toe and will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks. Bane is averaging career highs of 24.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.

NFL: Rams All-Pro WR Cooper Kupp will have ankle surgery Wednesday and be placed on IR. Kupp will miss at least four gamese, but coach Sean McVay didn’t rule the receiver out for the rest of the season. McVay said the “tightrope” procedure that will be performed on Kupp typically has a recovery time of five to six weeks.
