Streep joins ‘Only Murders’ season 3

-

Meryl Streep has joined the season three cast of “Only Murders in the Building.”

Selena Gomez broke the major casting news recently by sharing an Instagram video from the set of the next season, which just started filming. In the clip, Gomez happily announces that “the gang is back” while panning to co-stars Martin Short, Steve Martin, Andrea Martin and Paul Rudd.

“Could this honestly get any better?” Gomez says — to which Rudd replies, “Well, I do think it could get a little bit better.”

On cue, Streep pops up from behind the couch and offers Steve Martin a pillow as Gomez’s jaw melodramatically drops in mock surprise. Martin also posted a photo on Twitter of Streep wearing a long braided wig and posing with her new castmates on set.

The Streep reveal comes several months after the premiere of the Hulu series’ second season finale, which saw Rudd’s character, Ben Glenroy, suddenly drop dead in the middle of a play directed by Short’s character, Oliver. The third season will follow amateur sleuths and podcast hosts Oliver, Charles (Martin) and Mabel (Gomez) as they investigate Glenroy’s death.

“I could cry,” Gomez captioned her Instagram post. “Season 3 is coming!”

‘Minx’ moving to Starz:

Comedy series “Minx” will get another chance with viewers after its run was abruptly and unexpectedly cut short at HBO Max. Starz recently announced that it will be the new home for the comedy from writer and executive producer Ellen Rapoport, and premiere its sophomore season.

“Minx” follows an adultentertainment publisher (Jake Johnson) who teams up with a young feminist (Ophelia Lovibond) to produce the first pornographic magazine catering to women.

“We have always felt this show would be a perfect fit for our brand with our dedication to narratives by, about and for women,” Jeffrey Hirsch, Starz’s president and CEO, said in a news release.

In the same release, Rapoport said she’s “absolutely thrilled” to continue the series — which HBO Max renewed for a second season in May before pulling the plug in December — at Starz.

“We’ve found the perfect home,” she said. “Our writers, cast and crew have created something truly special in season two, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Winfrey, Washington join Netflix historical drama:

Kerry Washington has been tapped to act in and produce Tyler Perry’s first historical drama, “Six Triple Eight.”

Perry’s friend Oprah Winfrey will take part in the film as well. This will be her first acting role in five years. She last appeared in Ava DuVernay’s 2018 film “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Other big names in the cast include “Breaking Bad” star Dean Norris, “Law & Order” veteran Sam Waterston and Oscar winner Susan Sarandon.

The movie — written, directed and produced by Perry — will tell the true story of the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion, the only World War II battalion that consisted entirely of Black women. The 855 women were assigned to handle three years’ worth of undelivered letters and packages to and from U.S. soldiers.

Perry adapted the screenplay from an article written by historian Kevin M. Hymel and published in WWII History Magazine.

‘Abbott Elementary’ renewed for season 3:

In a recent tweet, creator and star Quinta Brunson announced that her sitcom “Abbott Elementary” has been renewed for a third season. The mockumentary-style comedy series follows a group of dedicated and quirky teachers at a public school in West Philadelphia.

After premiering in 2021, “Abbott” was an instant hit that has also been credited with bringing the broadcast sitcom back to life.

The second season is now airing Wednesdays on ABC.
