Man dies a month after being shot by county officer

A man shot by a Baltimore County Police officer Jan. 31 has died, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

Investigators say the man, identified Monday as Brian McCourry Jr., 37, of Essex, was driving a Kia SUV and attempted to evade police when an officer fired into the vehicle.

Last month, the Attorney General’s Office identified the shooter as Detective Jonathan Trenary, a 16-year veteran of the department who was placed on administrative leave.

McCourry had multiple outstanding warrants, but Thomas Lester, a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, declined to disclose the charges he faced when officers attempted the arrest.

But a woman who was in the passenger seat of McCourry’s Kia was indicted Feb. 22 on charges that included attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, according to court records. Police also suspected McCourry of attempted murder, they wrote in the woman’s charging documents, in connection with an incident alleged to have happened Dec. 23.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, police attempted to use a vehicle to block the SUV and arrest McCourry and the woman. When detectives approached the car, it started to drive away, hitting an unmarked police vehicle. Then, Trenary fired his gun, hitting McCourry in his upper body, the attorney general said.

McCourry was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died Friday.

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is still investigating the shooting, according to the news release from Saturday.
