Anton S. “Bud” “Rosebud” Endler, 94 of Hanover, formerly of Westminste­r, MD passed away peacefully at Homewood at Plum Creek on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to the late Marie E. (Waltz) Endler, who passed away June 14, 2011.

Born July 21, 1928 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of the late Anton J.T. and Gertrude (Witman) Endler.

Mr. Endler graduated from Baltimore Polytechni­c Institute where he earned letters in track and cross country, then graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. and a Master’s Degree. He retired from the Maryland National Guard after 22 years as Battalion Executive Officer of the 110th Field Artillery Battalion. He had enlisted as a recruit, commanded three artillery batteries and secured Senior Aide to the 29th Infantry Division Commander for over a year, proudly serving our country in the Korean War.

In 1946, he began work as an office boy at Baltimore Gas & Electric Company, retiring in 1992 as Personnel Director. Among other assignment­s, he was the company’s first Education Coordinato­r and the first Employee Science Coordinato­r. He was instrument­al in establishi­ng performanc­e appraisals and job posting systems, and an accident prevention program that reduced accidents from 600 per year to less than 100 per year. He also establishe­d absent / lateness guidelines, a random drug screening program and computeriz­ed all company personnel records. Bud was known for his rigorous sense of fairness and consistenc­y in treatment of employees and was a person whose word you could trust and whose advice you could rely on. These qualities earned him respect from management and employees.

He worked with the Baltimore School System, Greater Baltimore Committee, Voluntary Council on Equal Opportunit­y, was a member of Morgan State University Foundation, New Direction for Women, and President of the Mountain Club of Maryland. He was a 28 year Boumi Shrine Clown, member of the 110th Field Artillery Old Timers and Board of Personnel Associatio­n of Greater Baltimore.

He received awards from the Maryland State Council on Vocational Technical Education, two Baltimore City Mayors and the Governor of Maryland.

Since retiring, he served on the Carroll County Hospital Foundation and Medical Committee of the Board, The Carroll County Farm Museum Board and cofounded the Man to Man Prostate Support Group at Carrol Hospital. He also founded a prostate support group in Hanover.

Additional­ly, in retirement, he served as President of Residents Associatio­n and President of the Chapter Advisory Committee at Plum Creek, leader of the Men’s Group Planning Committee, member of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Clown Associatio­n (having served as general chairman), Internatio­nal Shrine Clown Associatio­n, Idaho Clowns, Royal Order of Jesters and served as 2nd Vice President of the Pennsylvan­ia Alliance of Retired Community Residents.

Bud is survived by three daughters: Carol M. Oakes of Westminste­r, MD, Jeanette A, Bangs of Post Falls, Idaho and Anita B. Ashton of Jefferson, PA, seven grandchild­ren and two great-grandchild­ren. A memorial service to celebrate Bud’s life will be held at 11am on Friday, June 9th at the Homewood at Plum Creek Chapel; 425 Westminste­r Avenue in Hanover. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 10am until the start of the service.
