2 teens arrested after one hurt in shooting near school

Two 14-year-olds were arrested on handgun charges after a minor was shot in the hand Monday afternoon in Lansdowne, prompting nearby schools to delay dismissal as Baltimore County Police cleared the scene.

The Department of Juvenile Services charged the two teens, one of whom was injured, for possessing a handgun, said Joy Stewart, director of communications for Baltimore County Police. The injured teen was discharged from the hospital Monday.

The handgun is a ghost gun, Stewart said. Ghost guns don’t have serial numbers and can’t be traced by police. Detectives are still investigating the incident and the number of people who were involved. Several ran away from the scene, Stewart said.

Officers responded at about 2:40 p.m. to a report of shots being fired in the area of Silerton and Tionesta roads, at an apartment complex within a mile of the schools, and found a male suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, Baltimore

County Police said.

The injured person, who police said is not a current Baltimore County Public Schools student, was taken to a hospital.

Police said detectives are probing the involvement of multiple people who were detained Monday afternoon in relation to the shooting.

The police presence nearby prompted four schools to take emergency precautions, temporarily delaying dismissal at Lansdowne Elementary School and Lansdowne Middle School.

Riverview Elementary School dismissed students after a brief lockout, and Lansdowne High School students had already been dismissed when the campus was placed on lockdown status, according to county schools spokesperson Charles Herndon.

Lockout status means a schools’ exterior doors are locked and access is limited from the outside, but the school day takes place as scheduled inside. During lockdowns, doors inside and outside are locked, and those in the school shelter in place.
