Ravens signing safety to practice squad in wake of Williams’ injury

- By Brian Wacker

While Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Monday that he doesn’t expect the organization to look outside its own building when it comes to filling the void of J.K. Dobbins after the running back suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon on Sunday, it has done so to make up for the loss of another notable player to injury.

With safety Marcus Williams out for “a while,” according to Harbaugh, after suffering a pectoral injury in the season-opening win over the Houston Texans, the Ravens are signing veteran safety Duron Harmon to their practice squad, his agent, Andy Simms, confirmed to The Baltimore Sun. Harmon worked out for the Ravens during training camp and the 32-year-old, who was born in Delaware and starred at Caesar Rodney High School, gives them a veteran option along with practice squad call-up Daryl Worley in a secondary that has been depleted by injuries.

Already, the Ravens are without cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who is still recovering from foot surgery he underwent last month, and cornerback Damarion “Pepe” Williams, who is on injured reserve and out for at least the first four games after undergoing foot surgery last month. They also lost cornerback Trayvon Mullen for the season to toe surgery.

Harmon, a third-round pick out of Rutgers by the New England Patriots in 2013, spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, for whom he had 86 tackles, five passes defensed and two interceptions.

After seven seasons with New England, where he was a member of three Super Bowl-winning teams, Harmon played one year each for the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons before signing with the Raiders. In all, he has played in 161 games, which includes 78 starts, and has 401 tackles, 43 passes defensed and 23 interceptions.

Meanwhile, in a related move, the Ravens released cornerback Tae Hayes from the practice squad on Tuesday. They also signed Worley to the 53-man roster and officially placed Dobbins on injured reserve.
