Westminster 58, South Carroll 51: With games getting canceled, rescheduled and potentially canceled again thanks to the winter weather, teams have no time to rest as everyone fights to play a season’s worth of games in just a limited amount of time.

For any Carroll County girls basketball team, that challenge becomes tougher when you have to go against a South Carroll team full of athletes that like to run the floor from the opening tip.

The Cavaliers can be a handful for teams and Monday night, it was Westminster coach Dave Urban’s turn to find a solution for a team that already beat his by 12 in December. It took 23 points from Maddy Gassman, another 18 from Jules Lesher and four extra minutes, but the Owls prevailed.

Westminster erased an 11-point deficit with three minutes remaining and left South Carroll with a 58-51 overtime win.

“I’m very pleased that we were able to settle ourselves, handle the pressure and hit the pressure shots at the end,” Urban said as his team improved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the county.

Down two after both teams spent the fourth quarter trading 3-pointers, Gassman secured the latest of her many rebounds on the night and put up a shot at the buzzer to tie and send the game into overtime.

From there, the fast-paced Cavaliers offense was stifled as Kaylen Battle’s steal and basket put Westminster in front early in the extra session. Seconds later, Gassman found Battle open for a 3-pointer as the senior went on a 5-0 run by herself to turn the momentum.

After a clutch Lesher 3-pointer, the Owls went from chasing the Cavaliers (6-4, 3-2) to now settling in and letting their defense carry them the rest of the way in overtime.

Mount de Sales 63, Catholic 8: The Mount*

de Sales Sailors hosted the Catholic Cubs for its ninth Pink Out game Monday night and points on the scoreboard took a back seat to the raffles, bake sale and Wall of Love helping to raise money for the St. Agnes Breast Center in Baltimore.

The Pink Out game was started in 2013 in honor of Carol Sauter who died at age 47, on April 6, 2012, of breast cancer. Sauter’s daughters, Katie and Megan, both attended Mount de Sales and spearheaded the inaugural game along with Eve Lukowski.

Mike Sauter, Carol’s husband, was in attendance Monday watching the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference Sailors roll to a 63-8 victory over the C Conference Cubs.

Mount de Sales junior Shelby Lewis had a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds but was more excited after the game talking about the event that resumed last year after a two-year hiatus.

“I think this is special because we started it a while ago with Nancy Lukowski [Eve’s mom] and just seeing people that aren’t even on the basketball team come together for one fundraiser really helps us,” Lewis said. “You can just see like our chemistry on the court and in our fundraiser with the baskets and everything. It’s really special.”
