Carroll County-based manufacturer will add 275 jobs in Taneytown

EVAPCO, one of Carroll County’s largest manufacturers, plans to expand in Taneytown for the second time in a decade and create 275 new jobs.

The expansion over two years will increase EVAPCO’s employment in the county to more than 840 workers, Gov. Wes Moore said Thursday. The company plans to add 45,000 square feet to its global headquarters on Allendale Lane.

Taneytown Mayor Christopher Miller said Friday that he welcomes news that EVAPCO, a maker of commercial heating, air conditioning and refrigeration products, is again expanding their operations in the city. The city’s planning commission prioritized the project and gave final approval Monday night to EVAPCO’s site plan, Miller said.

City officials will now begin working with Carroll County Workforce Development to find people to fill the jobs that will come with the expansion, Miller said.

The Maryland Department of Commerce has approved a $1.4 million conditional loan for the company through Advantage Maryland, which funds grants, loans and investments for economic development. The state also will provide a $200,000 grant through its Partnership for Workforce Quality program. EVAPCO will be eligible for various tax credits tied to job creation.

“EVAPCO has been one of Maryland’s powerhouse companies for decades and its reach now extends across the globe,” Moore said in a news release announcing the expansion.

The company considered alternative sites for expansion but chose to stay in Taneytown because of state and county assistance, including the loan and tax credit incentives, said Bill Jones, EVAPCO’s senior vice president of global operations, in the release.

“We appreciate the work that the Moore administration and Carroll County Economic Development did to keep this expansion in Taneytown when EVAPCO had other options,” Miller said.

EVAPCO was founded in 1976. It makes products in 23 locations and 10 countries that it supplies through a sales network of more than 200 offices.

In 2017, the Maryland Department of Commerce announced that EVAPCO would add 125 new jobs through 2022. At the time, the company planned to invest $15 million to expand its Taneytown manufacturing facility, including the construction of a new 160,000 squarefoot building adjacent to its current building.

“We are proud to be home to EVAPCO’s world headquarters and are excited that the company will expand its footprint in Taneytown and add new job opportunities for our community,” said Carroll County Commissioner Joe Vigliotti, who represents District 1, which includes Taneytown, in the state news release.

Denise Beaver, director of the county’s Department of Economic Development, also welcomed the news.

“As one of Carroll County’s largest manufacturers, EVAPCO’s local community and global impact is truly remarkable,” Beaver said.
