- Staff report

One of the few bright spots on the Maryland men’s basketball team has been honored for his standout season.

Fifth-year senior guard Jahmir Young was named All-Big Ten first team by the media and second team by the coaches Tuesday as part of the conference’s end-of-season awards.

Young, a Charlotte transfer and former DeMatha Catholic star, led the Terps (15-16, 7-13 Big Ten) with 20.8 points per game, which ranked third in the Big Ten and 22nd nationally.

He posted a career-best 623 points, which ranks 15th all-time for a single season at Maryland, and he became just the fifth player in program history to reach 1,000 points in two seasons.

Junior forward Julian

Reese, a Randallstown native and St. Frances graduate, earned All-Big Ten honorable mention by both the media and coaches, while fifth-year senior forward Donta Scott was also an honorable mention on the coaches’ side. DeShawn Harris-Smith rounded out the honorees on the All-Freshman Team.

Scott, who averaged 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds, became one of five players in program history to surpass 1,500 career points and 800 career rebounds and holds the program’s records for games played (160), games started (144) and minutes played (4,720).

Reese ranked second on the team in points (13.9) and first in rebounds (9.7) per game while posting a careerbest 15 double-doubles. With 417 points, 292 rebounds and 56 blocked shots, Reese joins Purdue’s Zach Edey as the only players in the country with 400-plus points, 250-plus rebounds, and 50-plus blocks this season.

Edey was named Big Ten Player of the Year for the second straight season.

Harris-Smith is the Terps’ first Big Ten All-Freshman selection since Jalen Smith in 2018-19 and the 12th overall since 1992-93. The rookie started 28 of 31 games, averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. He also added 65 assists and 30 steals, which ranked second and third, respectively, on the team.

Penn State senior guard Ace Baldwin Jr., a former St. Frances star who transferred from VCU to follow coach Mike Rhoades, was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Indiana’s Mackenzie Mgbako and Iowa’s Owen Freeman shared Freshman of the Year honors from the coaches, while Freeman earned the award from the media. Purdue’s Mason Gillis was named Sixth Man of the Year, and both the coaches and media selected Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg and Purdue’s Matt Painter as Co-Coaches of the Year.
