Bluffton , South Carolina - Allan Vingelen, 82, died peacefully at his Bluffton, SC home on May 18, 2024, due to complications from kidney failure. Al realized achievement throughout his life. He was an Eagle Scout, president of his college student union board, a Certified Public Accountant, and held a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a Master’s Degree in Systems Analysis. He was a U.S. Army Captain and served a year of active duty in Vietnam. Afterwards, he was a Financial Officer at Whirlpool Corporation where he worked for 27 years and, most importantly, raised three fine sons.

Al served as a board member, usually treasurer, of course, on several corporate and neighborhood boards of directors. Most recently he served on the Board of Directors at Barrington Arms and Singleton Beach Homeowners Association on Hilton Head Island, SC.

To keep his 6’3” 220 lb. frame in shape, Al ran many competitive events, including the Chicago Marathon. Sometimes he and his training crew would set a goal of a cold beer at a nearby town as motivation. Al also enjoyed playing golf and traveling. Al and his wife Linda took over 30 cruises, earned the Million Miles airline tag, and returned to Europe several times to revisit Heidelberg, Germany, where they lived for three years from 1967-70. Living in Germany fueled Al’s passion for German cars. He owned several, mostly Porsches. In 2008, Al took his three sons to visit their cousins in Vingelen, Norway.

Al and his wife, Linda (Howard) were married for 60 years. They met at the University of North Dakota where Al was active (Chapter Treasurer) in the Sigma Chi fraternity. Linda and Al raised three sons: John (Jill), Bill (Daniella), and Bob (Meika). They have 6 grandchildren: Spencer, Cole, Aden, Sarah, Dylan, and Maven. All fourteen members of the family get together at least once each year, usually with a themed reunion: “Vingelen’s Amazing Race”, “My Three Sons”, “Vitamin Sea in ‘23”, to name a few.

Al will be buried at The Beaufort National Cemetery at a private family ceremony. To honor Al’s life, donations may be made to the Vingelen Fund c/o Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, P.O. Box 23019, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29925 or on-line www.cf-Lowcountry.org. Islandfuneralhome.com.
