CODY BELLINGER RC AND EARLY CARD GALLERY

CARD GALLERY

- B Y R YA N C R A C K N E L L

After making a quick and dramatic impact, interest in Cody Bellinger Rookie Cards and anything with his name was quick to rise. That’s what happens when you start setting some impressive home run records during your first few months in the majors. But it didn’t stop there. After a lull in 2018, Bellinger’s historic start in 2019 has put his early cards on a lot of collectors’ radars.

A fourth round pick in the 2013 draft, Bellinger’s cards date back to that season. However, it was something of a slow rollout with Panini kicking things off, not much in 2014 and Topps putting him in just one product in 2015. The number of Bellinger cards jumped significantly in 2016, but he still doesn’t have nearly as many as a lot of other modern prospects.

All of the Bellinger cards released before his MLB debut fall under a couple of categories. First, there are the prospect and minor league cards. These are part of sets that focus on prospects before their big league debuts. Other cards are inserts in big league sets. Either way, they’re not considered Rookie Cards in the traditional sense. Collector preference is a big thing though, and the RC tag’s importance is different than it used to be.

2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball was the first product with a Bellinger RC. 2017 Donruss Optic and 2017 Topps Chrome followed a short time after. And then the floodgates opened. By the time the year came to a close, collectors had almost two dozen different Bellinger Rookie Cards to choose from between Topps and Panini. Plenty of additional cards can be found in insert sets as well.

Here’s a detailed look at each Bellinger Rookie

Card as well as some key highlights from the earlier Bellinger cards.

CODY BELLINGER ROOKIE CARD GUIDE

Only Cody Bellinger cards with the RC tag in the Beckett Baseball Card Database and Price Guide are listed here. Inserts and parallels are not. Some of his other key early cards follow.

01 2017 Bowman Chrome Cody Bellinger RC #27 This is where things get a little confusing with Bowman Chrome Prospect cards and Bowman Chrome Rookie Cards. Bellinger has a Chrome Prospect insert in 2017 Bowman Baseball. However, his Rookie Card, which has the same general layout, is in 2017 Bowman Chrome Baseball. Going by traditional RC definitions, the earlier Prospect card is an insert. Because one of the hallmarks of a Rookie Card being that it belongs in a base set, the Prospect card is disqualified. By the time 2017 Bowman Chrome Baseball had released, heʼd been in the majors long enough for Topps to get him in the main set. Andthatʼs why this is the Rookie Card.

As far as value goes, Bowman Chrome RCs are often overlooked. The autographs are king with this brand. So unless itʼs one of the tougher Refractor parallels, this card is generally fairly affordable when placed against other Bellinger Rookie Cards.

PARALLELS:

Refractors (/499), Purple Refractors (/250), Blue Refractors (/150), Green Refractors (/99), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

02 2017 Bowman Platinum Cody Bellinger RC #76

2017 Bowman Platinum Baseball has the first Cody Bellinger Rookie Card on the market. Between the foil stock and the background, thereʼs lots going on with the busy card. Adding to that is the fact that 2017 Bowman Platinum is exclusive to Walmart. Understandably, the card soared out of the gate but settled quickly once collectors realized there shouldnʼt be too short a supply. While still popular, it slowed significantly after the season went on as more Bellinger RCs were released.

Besides his Rookie Card, Bellinger also has a few inserts and a couple of autographs in the product.

PARALLELS:

Ice, Purple (/250), Green (/99), Orange (/25), Black (/10), Gold (1/1)

03 2017 Bowmanʼs Best Cody Bellinger RC #65

Another chromium release, 2017 Bowmanʼs Best has a Cody Bellinger Rookie Card thatʼs a lot more colorful and vibrant than Bowman Chrome. Itʼs not a pricey card and itʼs mixed in with a very late product thatʼs focused largely on autographs and prospects.

Like Bowman Chrome and Topps Chrome, the card is complemented by a full Refractors rainbow.

PARALLELS:

Refractors, Atomic Refractors, Purple Refractors (/250), Blue Refractors (/150), Green Refractors (/99), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/10), Superfractors (1/1)

04 2017 Donruss Cody Bellinger RC #196

Panini expanded the 2017 Donruss Baseball checklist by adding some rookies in 2017 Panini Chronicles. Bellinger was one of them. The card uses the same design as other Donruss cards, complete with the Rated Rookie logo. While not necessarily a rare card, itʼs likely to be tougher to find than regular Donruss card because of its inclusion in Chronicles.

PARALLELS:

Cyan Back, Gray Border (/199), Press Proof Gold (/99), Aqueous Test Proof (/49), Pink Border (/25), Artists Proof (/10), Press Proof (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)

05 2017 Donruss Optic Cody Bellinger RC #65

Chromium is the order of the day with 2017 Donruss Optic Baseball. While most cards in the product are merely chromedout versions of their regular Donruss cards, Bellinger wasnʼt in the earlier release as a base card so Optic is entirely new. Itʼs part of the Rated Rookie subset. Parallels come in several colored Prizms.

PARALLELS:

Holo, Pink, Purple, Aqua (/299), Orange (/199), Blue (/149), Red (/99), Carolina Blue (/50), Black (/25), Gold (/10), Green (/5), Gold Vinyl (1/1)

06 2017 Panini Chronicles Cody Bellinger RC #120

/499 2017 Panini Chroniclesʼ big draw is how it folds in several brands from Paniniʼs portfolio. But it does have a base set and Bellinger is part of it. Numbered to 499, the design takes more of a storytelling approach, kind of like an abbreviated newspaper.

PARALLELS:

Gold (/399), Blue (/299), Green (/199), Purple (/99), Red (/25), Black (1/1)

07 2017 Panini Flawless Cody Bellinger RC #105 /20 The 2017 Panini Flawless Cody Bellinger doesnʼt have an autograph or massive patch (but there are plenty of inserts in the product that do). It does come with a small diamond embedded in it. Itʼs also numbered to just 20 copies making it extremely tough to find. Parallels come with a variety of other gems.

It is worth noting that Bellinger also has a pair of subset cards in the Flawless base set, Milestones and All-Star.

PARALLELS: Ruby (/15), Sapphire (/10), Emerald (/5), Diamond

08 2017 Panini Gold Standard Cody Bellinger RC Auto Jersey #31 /99 Found in packs of 2017 Panini Chronicles, Bellingerʼs Gold Standard RC takes a more high-end approach with an autograph and jersey swatch. It was originally inserted as a redemption.

PARALLELS:

Prime Tag

09 2017 Panini National Treasures Cody Bellinger RC Auto Patch #192 /49 The 2017 Panini National Treasures Cody Bellinger Rookie Card arrived in packs in the form of a redemption. The final card has an autograph and a jumbo swatch. Basically, this is about as high-end as you get from Panini. Flawless is more rare, but itʼs focal point is a diamond. Numbered to 49, this is also one of the toughest Cody Bellinger Rookie Cards to track down.

PARALLELS:

Gold (/20), Holo Gold (/15), Holo Silver (/10), Brand Logo (1/1), Laundry Tag (1/1), Platinum (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)

10 2017 Panini Prizm Cody Bellinger RC #2

2017 Panini Prizm is another line included in Panini Chronicles. This represents Paniniʼs take on chromium for the year. That means a shiny look at all levels, including the cardʼs many parallels.

PARALLELS:

Flash, Orange (/399), Light Blue (/299), Blue Wave (/199), Purple Scope (/99), Red Crystals (/75), Green Power (/49), Camo (/25), Gold (/10), Gold Vinyl (/5), Black Finite (1/1)

11 2017 Topps Chrome Cody Bellinger RC #79

Most cards in 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball are essentially metallic versions of their flagship card. But Cody Bellinger debuted too late to appear in Series 1 or Series 2 so this represents an entirely new card no matter how you look at it. Itʼs also among his first cards. In addition to the base Rookie Card, the 2017 Topps Chrome Cody Bellinger has a full rainbow of Refractors parallels plus a Rookie Autograph, which also has no shortage of Refractors.

PARALLELS:

Refractors, Negative Refractors, Pink Refractors, Sepia Refractors, Prism Refractors, X-Fractors, Purple Refractors (/250), Blue Refractors (/150), Green Refractors (/99), Blue Wave Refractors (/75), Gold Refractors (/50), Gold Wave Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

12 2017 Topps Chrome Update Cody Bellinger RC #HMT10

The 2017 year end saw Topps release a handful of products to specific retail stores. 2017 Topps Chrome Update was one of them, available only at Target. Sold in small blasters, the set was a quick sellout, thanks in part to Bellinger and the overall strength of the yearʼs rookie class. Although the set maintains the same design as 2017 Topps Chrome, the numbering is different.

PARALLELS:

Refractors (/250), X-fractors (/99), Red Refractors (/25),

Gold Refractors (/50), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

13 2017 Topps Diamond Icons Cody Bellinger RC Autograph #AU-CBE /25

2017 Topps Diamond Icons marked the lineʼs debut. Itʼs one of a growing number of ultra high-end products in their portfolio. For Bellinger, that means an autographed Rookie Card numbered to 25. Or does it? Included in packs as a redemption, itʼs possible the 2017 National League Rookie of the Year doesnʼt have a base version. All those that surfaced online in the first few months following the setʼs release were parallels or other inserts. If that turns out to be the case, then Bellinger doesnʼt have an RC in Diamond Icons.

PARALLELS:

Purple (/10), Red (/5), Gold (1/1)

14 2017 Topps Dynasty Cody Bellinger RC Auto Patch #APCB1 – AP-CB6 /10 Cody Bellinger has six different cards in 2017 Topps Dynasty. Numbered to just 10 copies each, all of them come with both an autograph and a jumbo patch. That gives the cards the trifecta of a signature, swatch and the distinction of being the rarest Cody Bellinger Rookie Card all wrapped into one.

But with six different cards to choose from, the rarity is a bit askew. Make no doubt, theyʼre still extremely rare. When you put all the versions together as well as all their parallels, there are still less than 100 total Bellinger cards in 2017 Dynasty.

Cards were included in boxs as redemptions.

PARALLELS: Gold (/5), Blue (1/1)

15 2017 Topps Fire Cody Bellinger RC #121 The 2017 Topps Fire Cody Bellinger stands out. Itʼs anything but nostalgic.

Itʼs also part of a Targetexclusive product. Although Fire has been used as the basis of standalone releases in other sports, this marks the first time it got a full set in baseball outside of inserts and online mini sets.

Despite its Target-only release, this isnʼt a rare card. For some, it might be a little more difficult to track down if they donʼt have a Target nearby or their local shop sold out before they had a chance to find some.

PARALLELS: Blue Chip, Flame, Gold Minted, Onyx, Orange (/299), Green (/199), Purple (/99), Magenta (/25), Inferno (1/1)

16 2017 Topps Five Star Cody Bellinger RC Autograph #FSA-CB Like a lot of Cody Bellinger autograph cards released in the latter part of the season, his 2017 Topps Five Star Rookie Card was a redemption. The final card has an oncard signature and lots of intricate foil incorporated into the signing area.

When Five Star debuted, it was the top of Toppsʼ high-end sets. Itʼs still up there, but multiple products have surpassed it in the past couple of years.

PARALLELS: Purple (/50), Blue (/25), Green (/15), Gold (/10), Orange (/5), Red (1/1)

17 2017 Topps Gallery Cody Bellinger RC #143 2017 saw several retail exclusives. One of them was the return of Topps Gallery. Sold originally only at Walmart, the focal point of the release was original art. All of the cards, inserts and base, use drawings and paintings instead of photos. Itʼs not a highend concept but it does help it stand out. Similar to other retail exclusives like Bowman Platinum and Topps Fire, rarity isnʼt much of an issue.

PARALLELS: Artist Proof, Canvas, Private Issue (/250), Green (/99), Blue (/50), Orange (/25), Artist Originals (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Red (1/1)

18 2017

Topps Gold Label Class 1 Cody Bellinger RC #19

The 2017 Topps Gold Label Cody Bellinger Rookie Card is a bit of a throwback. After more than a decade away, Topps brought the brand back in 2016. Itʼs highlighted by a tiered base set that has three different levels, or classes. Although theyʼre generally the same, the background photos are different on each playerʼs cards. Class 1 cards are the most common. That makes this the RC for Bellinger.

PARALLELS: Black, Blue (/150), Red (/75), Gold (1/1)

2017 Topps Heritage Cody Bellinger RC #678

The 2017 Topps Heritage Cody Bellinger Rookie

Card is found in High Number packs. The retro-themed card is based on the 1968 design and expands the main 2017 Heritage release. Traditionally, this is an extremely popular brand with a wide range of collectors. So while not the most valuable card, donʼt be shocked if itʼs more than many of Bellingerʼs other more common Rookies.

In addition to the parallels, the card has three different variations. The most obvious has an action photo. The Color Swap Variation has a black circle instead of a red one on the front. Finally, thereʼs a rare Error variation that simply has “Dodgers” in white on the front instead of yellow.

PARALLELS:

Mini (/100), Blue (50 copies), Bright Yellow Back (25 copies), Gray Back (10 copies), Reverse Stock (5 copies)

20 2017 Topps High Tek Cody Bellinger RC #HT-CBE

For those who like their cards wild and with lots of possibilities, thereʼs the 2017 Topps High Tek Cody Bellinger Rookie Card. The acetate stock and foil background pattern are just the beginning. On top of all the traditional color parallels, High Tek comes with lots of background variations. On the one hand, it leads to an extensive chase for those wanting everything. But it can also be daunting to keep track of the patterns and their rarities.

PARALLELS:

Blackout, Blackout Braid, Braid, Camo Stripes, Hexagon Circle, Spiral Grid, Squiggle, Stadium, Tidal Diffractors, Tidal Diffractors (/250),

Green Rainbow (/99), Blue Rainbow (/75), Orange Magma (/25), Snowflake SpecTEKular Diffractor (/15), Red Orbit Diffractor (/10), Gold Galactic Diffractor (1/1), Radiant Swirl Gold Galactic Diffractor (1/1)

21 2017

Topps Transcendent Cody Bellinger RC #46 /87

2017 Topps Transcendent Baseball is the highest of the high-end. While much of its original $25,000 cost came from the large number of superstar autographs in each box, thatʼs not all there is. Boxes also include a full base set. Numbered to just 87, this Cody Bellinger Rookie Card has an elegant design that includes a layered wood border and a metal frame around the outside. The wood is a nod to 1987 Topps Baseball, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017.

Not a cheap card, its value stems in part from its rarity. The prestige of the product is also a key factor with the card.

22 2017 Topps Update Cody Bellinger RC #US50

Cody Bellinger has a lot of cards in 2017 Topps Update Series Baseball. But most are subset cards for things like the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. The Rookie Card is number US50 and has him taking a mighty swing. If that werenʼt enough, #US50 has a pair of variations. The one picturing Bellinger cross home surrounded by teammates is much tougher than the common card but one of the productʼs easier variants. The second short print, which shows Bellinger pointing up, is extremely tough.

Although not the most valuable Cody Bellinger Rookie Card, 2017 Topps Update has the benefit of featuring his flagship RC. Thereʼs lots of history in the brand that goes with it. And that means something to a lot of collectors.

PARALLELS:

Black and White Negative, Rainbow Foil, Toys ʻRʼ Us Purple, Gold (/2017), Vintage Stock (/99), Black (/66), Fatherʼs Day Blue (/50), Motherʼs Day Pink (/50), Memorial Day Camo (/25), Clear (/10), Platinum (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)

23 2017 Topps Walmart Holiday Snowflake Cody Bellinger RC #HMW120

2017 Topps Walmart Holiday Snowflake puts a wintery spin on the yearʼs flagship set. Available only in blasters at Walmart, the set isnʼt overly rare but there is some exclusivity with its distribution. For the setʼs Cody Bellinger Rookie Card, it also has the benefit of a new photo, something that canʼt be said for a lot of players on the abbreviated checklist. While that might not translate into a big price premium, it does make for a interesting card.

Key Cody Bellinger Prospect and Pre-Rookie Cards

The following is not an exhausted list. Rather, it highlights some of the most important Cody Bellinger cards and others that donʼt fall under traditional Rookie Card definitions. Particular emphasis is paid to the earliest Cody Bellinger cards, autographs and popular inserts.

24 2013 Elite Extra Edition Cody Bellinger Autograph #158 /673

Panini released their first Cody Bellinger card nearly two years before Topps. Similar to Bowman in that the product is prospectdriven, the card comes with an on-card signature and is numbered to 673 copies. It also has more than a dozen parallels, although not all are signed.

PARALLELS:

Signature Aspirations (/100), Status Blue (/50), Red Ink (/25), Status Emerald (/25), Green Ink (/10), Status Orange (/10), Status Gold (/5), Status Black (1/1)

UNSIGNED PARALLELS:

Aspirations (/200), Status (/100), Status Emerald (/25), Status Orange (/10), Status Gold (/5)

25 2014 Ogden Raptors Grandstand Cody Bellinger

The 2014 Ogden Raptors Grandstand Cody Bellinger is his first minor league card, not to mention first in a pro uniform. Itʼs extremely tough to find. Thatʼs because of the setʼs local distribution, which likely meant a small production run to begin with.

26 2015 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs Cody Bellinger #BCAP-CBE

The 2015 Bowman Chrome Cody Bellinger autograph is the outfielderʼs key card. And it should remain that way even with the vast array of Bellinger RCs. It may not be his most valuable card (itʼs still not cheap), but itʼs the one that collectors seek out en masse. This is the case with virtually every modern player.

But there is something of an anomaly happening here. Usually Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs are paired with a regular, unsigned Bowman Chrome Prospect card. But thatʼs not the case here. Bellinger didnʼt get his first unsigned Bowman cards until 2016. That makes the autograph his only MLB card from 2015.

The card is found in 2015 Bowman Chrome Baseball, not 2015 Bowman.

PARALLELS: Refractor (/499), Purple Refractor (/250), Blue Refractor (/150), Green Refractor (/99), Gold Refractor (/50), Orange Refractor (/25), Blue Twitter Refractor (/3), Red Refractor (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractor (1/1)

27 2017 Topps Chrome Rookie Autographs Cody Bellinger #RA-CB

In addition to his base card, 2017 Topps Chrome Baseball also has Cody Bellinger among the Rookie Autographs. Signed on-card, the insert set has a fairly long-standing history with the chromium brand. Packs have a mix of live versions and redemptions.

PARALLELS: Refractors

(/499), Purple Refractors (/250), Blue Refractors (/150), Green Refractors (/99), Blue Wave Refractors (/75), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), X-Fractors (/20), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

28 2017 Topps Now Cody Bellinger

Given his hot MLB start, it shouldnʼt be surprising that Bellinger got multiple 2017 Topps Now cards after his call-up. In fact, his MLB debut (and ensuing first hit) were commemorated on a card released the day after his first game. Sold for just 24 hours on the Topps website, it has 1,555 copies. In the months that followed, many Bellinger moments were also highlighted in the ondemand set.

PARALLELS: Golden Ticket (1/1)

29 2017 Topps Now Autographs Cody Bellinger

Every so often, the stars align and a big event warrants a Topps Now autograph. Before the All-Star Break, 2017 Topps Now already had two different Cody Bellinger autographs. The first came at the end of May, honoring his record for becoming the fastest Dodgers player to hit 10 home runs. About three weeks later, Bellinger set another home run mark, this time becoming the fastest player in Major League his to reach 21 home runs. Both of these autographs have 99 regular copies as well as parallels numbered to 49, 25, 10 and 1. Yet another autograph came when Bellinger hit for the cycle in mid-July. This third autograph came with just 49 copies for the most plentiful version. Other parallels are in line with his previous cards plus a new Orange one numbered to 5.

30 2017 Topps Now Platinum Autographs Cody Bellinger

Topps Now Platinum members were invited to a special event at the 2017 MLB All-Star Game in Miami. Attendees received some exclusive cards including this Cody Bellinger autograph that wasnʼt offered to the general public.

Itʼs not numbered so exact amounts are not known. However, itʼs believed that the maximum number copies is 25, potentially less.
