e final K-Mart boxed set was released in 1990, and simply highlighted 16 of the top players from each league.
Each league was represented with a full eight-man starting lineup, four starting pitchers, two relief pitchers, and two other standout hitters who were not included in the starting lineup. e 33-card checklist is rounded out with a manager card shared by Tony La Russa (Athletics) and Roger Craig (Giants).
is was K-Mart’s first opportunity to include phenom Ken Griffey Jr. in one of its sets, but they instead went with an outfield of Jose Canseco, Kirby Puckett and Rickey Henderson, while Fred McGriff and Mark McGwire claimed the other hitters spots.
e most obscure name in the set is Jeff Ballard who went 18-8 with a 3.43 ERA in 215.1 innings for the Baltimore Orioles in ‘89 to finish sixth in AL Cy Young voting. at proved to be far and away the peak of his seven-year career.
