With David Pastrnak starting the season on IR and Alex Ovechkin trapped in the defense-first East Division, Matthews is the odds-on favorite to claim his first Rocket Richard Trophy as the league’s leading goal scorer. Collectors have revered the shoot-first center since he was taken with the top pick in 2016, but it’s widely believed that he’s just scratching the surface of his potential after scoring 159 goals in his first 285 games. “For my money, he’s the best value in the hobby,” said collector Aziz Harun. “Goal scoring is where it’s at … and Matthews has the best shot in the league. And he’s only getting better.” Matthews spent the fall training with McDavid and a handful of NHLers in Arizona, a set-up featuring scrimmages so dynamic that one participant reportedly was crushed that there were no video recordings to share with the world. For Matthews, the sessions provided a chance to pick up some tips from the former Hart Trophy winner. “It’s no secret (McDavid) is the best player in the league,” he said. “So it was great to spend some time with him, just being around him and picking his brain. I definitely learned a lot.” One of the things he picked up on was McDavid’s intensity. “He does everything full speed, all the time,” Matthews said. That intensity was evident early in the season. Recognizing the opportunity at hand for both himself and his team, Matthews seemed to have an extra jump in his step. And with eight chances on the schedule to go head-to-head with McDavid, it’s clear that this could be the perfect time to add his cardboard to your collection. “(Edmonton-Toronto) has all the makings of a great rivalry that really hasn’t been cultivated enough because of the geography,” Harun said. “Everyone will be watching Matthews and McDavid. This season will be a great chance to show who’s really better.”
