EDMONTON OILERS

-

Here’s all you need to know about the otherworldly o ensive prowess of McDavid: In a season that’s been truncated to just 56 games, much ink has been spilled on whether or not he’ll reach 100 points. Keep in mind that the century mark has been reached just 15 times over the past 10 82-game seasons, and McDavid accounts for three of those. Can he do it again in this abbreviated campaign? Probably not. But it’ll be fun to watch, as his two-period hat trick in Edmonton’s second game of the season showed us. His early results suggested we’re just now entering the Peak McDavid years. “He’s out there reminding everyone who the best player in the world is,” said SportsNet’s Ray Ferraro. “He thinks the game and executes like no one else can.” McDavid’s cards already are the most joy-inducing pulls from any pack. And his singles are the hottest sellers on the secondary market. Little wonder then that, in the aftermath of the December sale of a PSA 10 Wayne Gretzky O-Pee-Chee RC for $1.29 million, all eyes turned to McDavid as the next big-dollar hockey sale. Although he’s probably several years away from creating the market for a seven-figure card, there are a lot more collectors interested in holding his key singles then in selling them these days. “It amazes me what people are willing to pay for his cards,” said McDavid collector Shiren Fuller. “Not just his premium RCs, because you don’t see those offered very often, but his key inserts, especially from his rookie year. You have to really want something to beat the competition for many of those cards. I mean, you have to be a ‘money’s no object’ type of buyer. The way he’s putting up the stats, I expect to see those (prices) rising even more this season.”
