Beckett Hockey

NFT-based collectibles could take on any number of forms when they inevitably arrive in the hockey market, but it’s a good bet that they’ll follow the Top Shot model of brief highlight clips. It’s the best way of enticing fans who have an attachment to a particular player, or those who could be drawn in by the skill displayed in a given moment.

If that’s the way it plays out, it’s likely the focus will be on recent highlights, but there are several vintage moments that would generate massive demand, and significant re-sale potential for the licensors.

Here are 18 we’d like to see.

• Sidney Crosby’s 2008 Winter Classic goal

• Bobby Orr’s 1970 Cup winner

• Wayne Gretzky scores #802

• Mario Lemieux’s 1988 Five goals, five ways

(one for each way)

• Connor McDavid’s 2020 goal against the Maple Leafs

• Ray Bourque hoists the Stanley Cup in 2000

• Gretzky’s 1999 farewell

• Steve Yzerman’s 1996 double-OT goal vs. the Blues

• Gretzky scores #50 in 39 games

• Alexander Ovechkin’s 2006 back sliding goal

• Bill Barilko’s 1951 OT Cup clincher

• Gretzky: “I promised Mess I wouldn’t do this.”

• Pavel Datsyuk 2007 goal against Dallas

• Owen Nolan’s Called Shot at the 1997 ASG
