2021-22 SKYBOX METAL UNIVERSE

WHAT IS IT?

A tribute to the bold choices of the 1990s NBA sets of the same name, Metal Universe is a throwback brand built around inserts and parallels. Unlike last year’s release, ‘21-22 Metal Universe does not promise one sig ber box. Instead, the hit is listed as “an autograph, PMG, Jambalaya, or other coveted cards.”

THE BASICS:

The shell set features 100 cards. The 50-card Alternate Jersey subset (1:2 packs) and 50 rookies (1:2 packs) extend the series to 200 cards. Each pack should have either a base RC or Alternate Jersey single.

CHASE HIGHLIGHTS:

Precious Metal Gems will be the big draw. Each single will have 100 copies, with the first 10 on a green substrate and the final 90 on red. Gold PMGs are 1/1. Other scarcity-driven inserts include Metal-X (1:240), Jambalaya (1:720), and Platinum Portraits (1:1,920), which feature laser die-cut images.

AUTOGRAPHS:

Key sigs include parallel Base Autographs (1:140),

Base Alternate Jersey Autographs (1:1,000), and Base Rookie Autographs (#/399 or less). Other sig sets include 1998-99 Skybox Premium Prospects Autographs (1:135), Championship Galaxy Autographs (1:2,000), Neon

Icon Autographs (1:2,000), and Skybox Premium Prospects Star Emeralds Autographs(#/10).

WHAT DO YOU THINK?:

We love the design of the Big Man On Ice inserts, which pay homage to the old NBA Big Man On Court series. They’re so bold, we think they might have been better purposed as a long-odds chase, instead of an easy 1:8. Still, should be fun to collect!
