2002-03 SP Authentic #186 Henrik Zetterberg
PSA Gem Mint 10: 3 (22%)
BGS Gem Mint 9.5: 1 (2%)
BGS Pristine 10: 0 (0%)
A back injury visibly slowed Zetterberg over the final years of his 15-season career but it couldn’t erase his legacy of excellence in Motown, where he is justifiably regarded as one of the greatest ever to wear the winged wheel.
He ranked second in goals (337) and third in points (960) among members of the 1999 dra class despite being taken in the seventh round (210th overall), and was a perennial candidate for the Selke Trophy as NHL’s best defensive forward. He was the Conn Smythe winner in 2008 a er helping the Wings win the Stanley Cup with his league-leading 27 points in 22 games. He was named captain of the team in 2012, holding the honor until his retirement in 2018. Little wonder he was regarded as one of Hockeytown’s favorite sons to collect.
While he earned 43 unique Rookie Cards, this single is one of the most intriguing. ere are 999 copies of this card, so it’s scarce (relative to demand) in raw form. Graded, it’s almost non-existent in premium condition with just four copies slabbed in Gem Mint by BGS and PSA combined. It’s not hard to see why. Both top corners are easily damaged, especially the le which features a red edge. And because it was hard-signed by Zetterberg, it endured extra layers of human handling before being packaged, which limited the potential for Gem Mint copies. All told, it’s an absolute sleeper in the graded category.
