1984-85 O-Pee-Chee #18 Tom Barrasso
PSA Gem Mint 10: 31 (8%)
BGS Gem Mint 9.5: 19 (18%)
BGS Pristine 10: 5 (5%)
The oldest card on this list is a bit of an outlier. Other key RCs in this set, including Chelios, Steve Yzerman, Cam Neely, and Doug Gilmour have been heavily submitted with somewhere between 100 - 250 copies of each returning in Gem Mint slab.
Barrasso hasn’t yet been enshrined in the Hall of Fame like those players, though he’s definitely worthy of consideration. The fifth pick in the 1983 dra made an immediate splash with the Buffalo Sabres, becoming just the third player in history to win both the Calder Trophy and Vezina Trophy in the same season. It’s easy to imagine the hobby impact that would have made if his debut had been delayed just long enough to coincide with the boom years. As it was, he had to wait until becoming a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins – and the NHL’s all-time leading scorer among goaltenders (48 points) – before he finally gained iconic status.
Even so, this card has been lightly submitted when compared to others in this set (just over 500 copies), which might explain why Gem Mint slabs are so tough to track down. Edges were always an issue in older O-Pee-Chee releases, so it’s not entirely surprising to see such a small quantity make the grade. at said, this is a card that might be worth submitting (or tracking down) given Barrasso’s impressive legacy.
