WHAT DO YOU THINK?:

It’s funny to look back a few years at the trepidation that followed the announcement that UD would assume control of the OPC brand from Topps. e company has proven worthy of the obligation, delivering a product that maintains the old-school feel while delivering the value modern collectors expect. is is a product every collector should pursue.

WHAT IS IT?:

Trilogy is a product that’s always struggled to differentiate itself from the pack outside of an inconsistently applied “Rule of

rees” theme, but it’s not without its charms. As such, your mileage may vary. Hobby boxes offer both autograph and memorabilia hits, along with three parallels and three rookies.

THE BASICS:

e 250-card base set is led by 100 veterans. Each has Red, Blue, and Green parallels, with each of those having Common, Uncommon, and Rare versions. Select cards have Jersey (1:28 hobby), Gold Auto (1:48), Patch, Patch Auto, and Purple Auto (1/1) variations. 50 Rookie Premieres get the same treatment with Common (/999), Uncommon (/699), and Rare (/299) versions, along with Red, Blue, and Green variations. Both Vets and Rookies have one-of-one Purple parallels.

Select cards in both subsets also get the signature and swatch treatments with Jersey (1:28 hobby packs), Gold Auto (1:48), Patch, Patch Auto, and Purple Auto (1/1) versions for vets.

Gold Autographs for Common Rookies come in four levels, numbered between 49 and 449 copies. ere are also Jersey (/499) and Purple Autograph (1/1) versions. Uncommon Rookies Gold Autographs have either 149, 99, or 49 copies each. Patch parallels are numbered to 49. Rare Rookies Gold Autographs have print runs of 33, 13, or three, while Tags have five copies.

CHASE HIGHLIGHTS:

Signature Pucks land 1:42 hobby packs. ese have Team Logo (/23) and NHL Shield Logo (/3) versions. Rookie Signature Pucks are tougher at 1:144, but parallels have the same print runs. Team Logo (/23) and NHL Shield Logo (/3) versions. Other oncard autograph sets include Auto Focus (1:480), Auto Focus Rookies (1:1,200), Crystalized Signatures (1:480), and a new batch of five Scripted Hall of Fame Plaques (/25).

OTHER INSERTS:

Frozen in Time (/275) features current and former stars on Plexiglass, with Frost

Blue (/50) and Black Ice (1/1) parallels. Rookie Premier offers an upgraded version of the main set’s 50 rookies. Base versions have 299 copies with additional Gold Tint (/50) and Black Ice (1/1) parallels available. 2005-06 Rookie Premier Retro (/99) take the design back in time. On the memorabilia side, Honorary Triple Swatches (/35 or less) have three different gameused swatches. Triple Relics (/35) all have premium pieces from three different players. Other inserts include Rookie Triptychs and Rookie Year Photo Variants, both of which are 1:120 packs.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?:

Collectors who’ve wondered what Trilogy offers that other Upper Deck products are likely to ask the same question this time around. Absent a compelling hook, any success it enjoys likely will be owed to the “Hey, something new to break!” crowd.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?:

We loved everything about UD1, from the outstanding photography to the potential-packed Young Guns, to the generous offering of inserts. Safe to say we’ll be at the LCS on release day with cash in hand for UD2.
