2023 24 UPPER DECK MVP
WHAT IS IT?:
Time as a linear concept may be integral to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, but it’s a lot more flexible in the hobby. Case in point: Just weeks after the release of 2020-21 e Cup comes news of the first product of 2023-24. MVP returns with a focus on affordability and accessibility that’s designed to appeal to the broadest crosssection of fans and collectors.
THE BASICS:
Collectors can chase the 200-card shell set, or add a little challenge by pursuing the 50 short prints. is mix of veteran and rookie players drops 1:2 hobby packs, so finishing the set is well within reach. MVP also offers six parallels, including:
• Ice Battles – 1:1 packs, SP – 1:5 packs
• Silver Script – 1:5 packs, SP – 1:20 packs
• Gold Script – 1:18 blaster packs, SP – 1:70 blaster packs
• Super Script – /25
• Black Super Script – /5
• Printing Plates – 1/1
Select high number short prints also have Magenta Autographs that fall 1:400 packs.
CHASE HIGHLIGHTS:
Alternate reads (1:10) is one of several new concepts. Each card pictures three teammates in retro sweaters. Gold parallels are 1:75. Ice Reps pairs captains with their team’s mascots (1:7; Gold 1:20). The NHL’s top talent can be found in Stars of the Rink (1:7; Gold 1:50).Colors and Contours returns with bright Spectrum Light FX backdrops. Gold are the most common with 250 copies each, followed by Green (/20), and Purple (/3).
20th Anniversary pays homage to 2003-04 Upper Deck MVP Talent inserts, reviving the design for a modern crop of players. Base versions are 1:5, while Gold Script are 1:36, and Super Script are numbered to 25.
MVP also offers a couple of redemptions that will deliver updated content based on early-season debuts. Rookie Redemptions (1:400) cover an entire division. There’s also a 2023 NHL #1 Dra Pick Redemption (1:1,250) along with a scarce Gold parallel (1:12,500). Given the mania we’re seeing for Connor Bedard’s junior cards, these two redemptions should be extremely popular.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?:
While the primary audience may be entry-level collectors, MVP offers something for everybody, including the first shot at an NHL card of Bedard. That alone ensures this will be one of the most widely broken products of the upcoming season.
