WAYNE GRETZKY ROOKIE CARD SELLS FOR $3.75 MILLION, SHATTERS RECORD PRICE FOR HOCKEY CARD

A1979-80 O-pee-chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card has sold for $3.75 million.

Graded a Gem Mint 10 by PSA, it’s the highest price ever for a hockey card. …e sale is almost triple the previous high, another PSA 10 Gretzky RC, that was set this past December.

Heritage Auctions helped facilitate the record Gretzky sale aŠer they were contacted by someone looking for the card. It was a private deal and the buyer wishes to remain anonymous.

“…roughout many years of collecting, this card has always been our ‘white whale,’” said the card’s new owner via press release. “Our family is thrilled to become the new guardians of this world-class hobby treasure.”

To date, just two 1979-80 O-pee-chee Wayne Gretzky cards have received PSA 10 grades.

Although all authentic 1979-80 O-pee-chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie Cards carry value today, the records are due to the condition. …e two sales to top $1 million are considered to be the best of the best.

Even dropping down to a Mint PSA 9 and the price drops significan­tly. On May 8, 2021, Heritage sold one for $240,000. …at’s up from a $216,000 sale in February. Even with 89 total PSA 9 copies to date, that’s still rare making these sales high.

Currently, NM-MT 8 copies are less than $30,000 while NM 7s are under $10,000. Both of these grades are still considered to be very strong and hard to achieve.
