Ab­bie Lou Hamp­ton Martin, born on Fe­bru­ary 12, 1916, in DeKalb, Mis­sis­sippi. She de­parted this life on Novem­ber 19, 2018 in East St. Louis, Illi­nois.

Af­ter earn­ing her col­lege de­gree, Ab­bie re­turned home to East St. Louis and went to work in School District 189 as a teacher. Ab­bie’s teach­ing ca­reer was blos­som­ing; she was ul­ti­mately pro­moted to the Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion Su­per­vi­sor in Dist 189.

Through­out this time, Ab­bie was busy bond­ing with other Delta women in the East St. Louis com­mu­nity. The Sorors de­cided to char­ter a chap­ter in the com­mu­nity. In 1942 these dy­namic women formed the Gamma Eta Chap­ter that would later be re-named East St. Louis Alum­nae Chap­ter.

Ab­bie leaves to keep her light il­lu­mi­nated her de­voted son, Werner B. Martin, Sr.; care­taker/daugh­ter-in­law, Carolyn Martin; grand­sons, Werner B. Martin, Jr. (Kim­berly), and James E. Hill; grand­daugh­ter, Crys­tal H. Thomp­son; two god­sons, Thamous Wooten and Fredrick Carter, Sr.; four great­grand­daugh­ters; seven great-great-grand­chil­dren; a host of nieces, neph­ews, cousins, friends, church fam­ily and soror­ity sis­ters.

Ser­vices: The visi­ta­tion will be held on Fri­day, Novem­ber 30, 2018, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Au­gus­tine of Hippo Catholic Church. The Delta Ser­vice will start at 6:30 p.m. The fu­neral mass will start at 11 a.m. on Sat­ur­day, De­cem­ber 1, 2018. The en­tomb­ment will be held at Mt. Carmel Ceme­tery.
