Abbie Lou Hampton Martin, born on February 12, 1916, in DeKalb, Mississippi. She departed this life on November 19, 2018 in East St. Louis, Illinois.
After earning her college degree, Abbie returned home to East St. Louis and went to work in School District 189 as a teacher. Abbie’s teaching career was blossoming; she was ultimately promoted to the Physical Education Supervisor in Dist 189.
Throughout this time, Abbie was busy bonding with other Delta women in the East St. Louis community. The Sorors decided to charter a chapter in the community. In 1942 these dynamic women formed the Gamma Eta Chapter that would later be re-named East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter.
Abbie leaves to keep her light illuminated her devoted son, Werner B. Martin, Sr.; caretaker/daughter-inlaw, Carolyn Martin; grandsons, Werner B. Martin, Jr. (Kimberly), and James E. Hill; granddaughter, Crystal H. Thompson; two godsons, Thamous Wooten and Fredrick Carter, Sr.; four greatgranddaughters; seven great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church family and sorority sisters.
Services: The visitation will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Augustine of Hippo Catholic Church. The Delta Service will start at 6:30 p.m. The funeral mass will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The entombment will be held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
