A peek under the tent
Presidential aspirant Kamala Harris recently gave us a peek under the tent as to how it would be if she occupied the White House. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee she harassed U.S. District Court nominee Brian Buescher, a Catholic and long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. She felt his affiliation with this Catholic fraternal organization with 1.9 million members implied that his judgment on issues like abortion and same sex marriage would be clouded. She unabashedly attempted to tutor Buescher during his hearing, opining that the Knights of Columbus was "opposed to a woman's right to choose" and "marriage equality."
Harris forgets that Article VI of the U.S. Constitution prohibits consideration of a person's faith in regard to fitness to hold a federal office. If religious beliefs were a disqualifier for a federal judgeship then who would she nominate for federal judges if she were president?
Harris forgets that five of our current Supreme Court justices are Roman Catholic and seem to have been able to set their per- sonal opinions aside when dealing with these and other moral questions as they relate to the rule of law.
