2-mile run to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs

- By Elisha Morrison

The Saline County Striders will put on the Arkansas Runner 2M on June 8, starting at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Saline County Riverside location.

The proceeds from the run will go to the Clubs, which will provide staff to help work the event.

“It is a race we put on every year to encourage everyone, especially kids, to be healthy and active,” said Race Director Chris Hall.

The 2-mile run will begin at 7:30 a.m. Day-of registration will begin at 6:30 a.m.

The 1-mile fun run for children ages 15 and younger will start at 8:30 a.m. Children who want to take part in the fun run need to sign up in advance so the Striders can be sure they have enough shirts and medals for all the participants.

The cost for the 2-mile run will be $10 for runners 14 and younger and $20 for adults who sign up in advance — or $25 the day of the race. Shirts are included, but to be guaranteed a correct size, runners should sign up by May 20.

Registration, packet pick up and the race start will all be at the Club.

From the Club, runners will go to Airlane Drive to Dale to Citizen’s Way up to the frontage road and end back at the Club. The entire course will be within the Riverside Park area.

Arkansas Runner LLC will serve as the race timer.

A water station will be set up at the 1-mile mark.

Hall said the Striders are hoping for 300 or more runners to participate.

As a group, Hall said the Striders work to promote healthy lifestyles in Saline County and try to give back to the community. They try to be involved in local races.

According to Hall, the run is a great race for beginners because it is shorter than most races and the course is in the park so runners do not have to worry about traffic.

The race’s sponsors are Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation, Farm Bureau Insurance, Regions Bank, Yoakum, Lovell & Co. Certified Public Accountants, Bryant Family Pharmacy, BaxleyPenfield-Moudy Realtors and Benton Parks and Recreation.

Hall is thankful for all the sponsors that are helping the group keep the race costs low. He added that the Parks Department has been outstanding as well. Hall encourages people to come out to the run and support the Boys & Girls Clubs while also working on a healthier lifestyle.

He emphasized the race is open to all levels of runners and walkers. He said no matter where participants are in their fitness, the Striders will support them.

There will be top-three awards for male and and female from each age group and overall male and female awards.
