No news is bad news
Growing up, I didn’t really pay attention to the news. My mom always said that the news is too sad. I agree that mainstream media is filled with stories of politics and crimes, but not all news is bad news.
As journalists, we have tasked with the job of being community watchdogs. We are responsible for making sure people in power are doing their job ethically and legally. These stories are what people commonly think of with newspapers, but working at a community newspaper, I have another job–being a historian and storyteller for our community.
We have an archive at our office that is filled with stories of this community. Reporters for decades have informed residents of the good, the bad and the ugly.
Day to day, I have to attend meetings and events but the majority of the stories I write tell of local residents’ accomplishments and happy things going on across Saline County. I became a reporter because I like to tell people’s stories.
There are so many great things happening in our community and so many people doing wonderful things to improve themselves and the world around them.
A prime example is the 2018 Salt Bowl. With the chaos of the game, fans from rival schools came together to help each other. For a week after the game, our staff wrote stories of new security measures, football players and other students going above and beyond to help others and an announcer who calmly helped fans leave the stadium safely.
We have a goal each week of showcasing 100 local faces in our newspaper. Those faces could be members of your family, friends or even people you attend church with. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to know everything that is happening in this growing community. We can only write about great stories if you give us information.
I encourage you to contact our office if you know of something special or uplifting happening in our community or if you know someone who is accomplishing great things.
Our office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The number is 501-315-8228.
