GLEN ROSE 42, GENOA CENTRAL 0

- By Alexis Meeks

GLEN ROSE — It was a tale of two halves for the Glen Rose Beavers as they hosted the Genoa Central Dragons for Week 2 of 5-3A conference play at Beaver Stadium Friday on homecoming.

The Beaver offense was held to only two touchdowns in the first half, but despite the slow start, the Beavers came out at halftime to rack up four more touchdowns while the defense held strong to shut out the Dragons and get the

win, 42-0.

The win puts the Beavers at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They host Hot Spring County rival Bismarck (1-4 overall, 0-2 conference) at Beaver Stadium next Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The loss for Genoa Central sets them back to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference. They return home to host Jessieville (3-2 overall, 1-1 conference) next Friday.

The Dragons won the coin toss and started the game with the ball at their own 32-yard line.

The Beaver defense held strong, forced a threeand-out and a Dragon punt. The Beavers drove down the field with rushes from senior Ethan Taylor. The Beavers were able to punch it into the end zone when quarterback Wesley Launius took the ball on a quarterback keeper for a 3-yard touchdown. The Beavers point-after was good and they took the early lead 7-0 with 6:41 left in the first.

It looked as though the Beavers would pull away early as the Dragons next drive ended after three plays. The Dragons fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Glen Rose’s Noah Wright. The Beavers then drove all the way to the Genoa Central 1-yard line but were stuffed on fourth-and-goal by the Dragon defense and the Dragons gained possession at their own 1-yard line.

The Dragons had possession going into the second quarter but were forced to punt after one play. It was the first of many punts for both teams. The Dragons punted three times in the second quarter while the Beavers punted twice. It was at the 2:11 mark when the Beavers were able to sustain a drive and score. The Beavers started at their own 31-yard line and E. Taylor was able to gain yards rushing the ball.

After a holding penalty on the Beavers that set them back 10 yards, Launius found Wright for a first down and an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Dragons moved the ball down to the Genoa Central 28-yard line. Launius threw once and kept the ball on a quarterback keep before finding Colton Hixon for a 23-yard touchdown. The PAT after was no good but the Beavers led 13-0. The final Beaver possession of the first half ended with an interception in the end zone with 3.5 seconds left.

After halftime is when the Beavers were able to turn the game around and torch the Dragons. The Beavers received the second-half kickoff and were able to score. A combination of rushing and passing the ball helped moved the Beavers downfield and put them in a position to score. On second-and-goal from the Genoa Central 1-yard line, E. Taylor found the end zone. The Beavers then went for two points but were stopped short of the goal line. At the 8:47 mark, the Beavers led 19-0.

After that it was all Beavers. The Beaver defense came up strong to force a punt and the Beavers scorched the Dragons on the first play of the drive when Launius threw to Dalton Taylor for a 78-yard touchdown with 4:09 left in the third.

The Dragons next drive started in Beaver territory. The Beavers forced a fourth-down situation and the Dragons decided to go for the first. The Dragons then fumbled the ball, picked it up and almost got to the line to gain but were tackled short of the marker. That’s when a flag was thrown on the Beavers for a personal foul and gave the Dragons a first down. Two plays later the third quarter ended with the Beavers in control 27-0.

Still in control, the Dragons had the ball at the Glen Rose 29-yard line to start the fourth quarter. Two plays later the Dragons turned the ball over on downs and gave possession back to the Beavers. The Beavers were able to find the end zone once again after regaining possession. From the Genoa Central 42-yard line Launius hit Wright for the 42-yard touchdown. Launius then ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Beavers a 35-0 lead with 10:26 left in the game.

After forcing a Dragon punt, the Beavers scored one more time before the game ended. Launius scored the touchdown from the 1-yard line. The Beavers PAT was good and with 3:10 left in the game the Beavers led 42-0.

This was the first meeting between the two teams and Glen Rose Head Coach Mark Kehner said he wanted to leave an impression. Glen Rose now leads the series 1-0.
