Fr. Hornets get past Cabot South

- By Connor Goodson

CABOT – The Bryant Freshman Hornets remained perfect on the 2020 Central Arkansas Junior High Conference season after defeating the Cabot South Freshman Panthers on Thursday night, 49-19. The Fr. Hornets are 8-0 overall, 6-0 in CAJHC play and would extend their winning streak to 18 straight dating back to the conference championship last season.

The night would start with Cabot’s offense striking first, scoring only nine seconds into the game on a 63-yard run by Carter Bing. The extra point would be no good, giving the Fr. Panthers a quick 6-0 lead.

It wouldn’t take Bryant long to answer, however, as Gideon Motes would find Mytorian Singleton for a 26-yard touchdown to cap off a 5-play drive. The extra point would be good, giving the Fr. Hornets the lead with 6:17 left in the first quarter. Bryant wouldn’t trail the rest of the game.

After the Fr. Hornet defense forced a Cabot punt, Jaden Ashford would break free on the first play of the drive for a 65-yard touchdown. This would give the Fr. Hornets a 14-6 lead with 2:46 left in the first. Cabot answered with a 1-play scoring drive as Gavin Reardon would score a 33-yard touchdown to

bring the Fr. Panthers within two.

The Fr. Hornets would be up 14-12 at the end of the first but would score 28 seconds into the second quarter on a 3-yard Motes rushing touchdown. This would cap off a 65-yard drive for the Bryant offense.

Cabot had a lengthy drive stalled by a fumble and holding penalty, giving Bryant the ball with 2:26 left before halftime. This would be plenty of time as Bryant drove 76 yards with Motes finding Drake Fowler from 2 yards out to end the half. Fr. Hornets would lead 28-12.

Bryant would get the ball to start the third quarter and pick up where they left off, scoring on the second play of the drive. Motes found Singleton again, this time for 58 yards to put the Fr. Hornets firmly in control, 35-12.

Cabot’s offense would respond with another Reardon touchdown to end a quick 3-play drive, making it 35-19 with four minutes to go in the third. However, Bryant’s offense wouldn’t let Cabot have any hope for a comeback. Ashford scampered for a 46-yard touchdown less than a minute later, giving Bryant a 42-19 lead.

The Fr. Hornet defense forced a turnover on downs to start the final quarter, giving the offense decent field position. Motes would find Ashford for a 22-yard touchdown to put the exclamation point on the night for the Fr. Hornets.

The 49-19 victory puts Bryant firmly in control of first place in the CAJHC standings as they travel to Conway next Thursday to face the Freshman Wampus Cats. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
