Constitution Camp set to educate while having summer fun

- By Dana Guthrie dguthrie@bentoncourier.com

With most summer camps for kids focusing solely on recreational activities, one camp is giving kids a chance to have some summer fun while learning some important facts about the country.

“Constitution Camp is a day camp at Crosspointe Church in Bryant,” said organizer Jennifer Lancaster. “Our mission is to enhance understanding of the genius of our United States Constitution, as well as, an appreciation of our Judeo-christian moral heritage, American heritage of courage and ingenuity, and the application of free enterprise — which together gave our nation an unprecedented history of growth and prosperity, as well as, making us the envy of the world. We want to motivate and inspire the next generation of Patriots.”

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 26 through 30 at Crosspointe Church in Bryant and the theme for the camp is “Celebrate America Through the Constitution.” The goal is to teach children about the country’s history and the founding document that shaped the government.

“We will also examine and expose some of the abuses and perversions that have brought our nation and economy down and offer discussion to counter the negative influences in our lives, while providing recreational activities that build our understanding of the Constitution,” Lancaster said.

The camp has planned many fun activities like inflatables, a snow cone truck and chances to win prizes to help facilitate learning while ensuring the kids also have a great time.

“We will have many games and activities including Constitution Jeopardy, Constitution Bingo, a scavenger hunt, art projects, a bouncy house, water slide and many trivia questions asked throughout everyday with the opportunity to win prizes,” Lancaster said.

The camp is open to kids in the second grade through the ninth grade.

“We believe kids in these grades can learn to appreciate freedom and understand the form of government that has created the most

free country in the world,” Lancaster said.

A number of special guests will be on-site to speak with the kids about their different roles in government including Supreme Court Justice Barbara Webb, Sen. Kim Hammer, Romanian Refugee Marcela White and Lt. Governor Tim Griffin.

The cost for the camp is $35 per child and registration will close July 23. Registration can be found on www.eventbrite.com by searching Constitution Camp. Event proceeds go to the Saline County Republican Women.

Sponsors for the event include Stephanie and Mike Duke, Arkansas Medical Staffing, Judge Stephanie Casady for Arkansas Court of Appeals, Ragan Kyzer for Saline County Treasurer, Menchie’s, and Chick-fil-a.

“It’s important to teach our kids about the influence of the United States on the world,” Lancaster said. “The U.S. has been, and still is, a beacon of freedom for countries all over the world. Our form of government created the most free country the world has ever known and it is important for our children to learn and practice that legacy.”
