Library food pantry in need of donations

Both of Saline County Library’s community pantry locations are in need of donated items to keep them in stock to help those in need in the community.

Community Engagement Manager Kari Lapp said the library is low on supplies to stock the two free pantries.

“We know food insecurity is a big deal,” Lapp said, calling it a “pandemic.”

She added that Arkansas is one of the most food insecure states in the nation.

The food pantry at each location is in a place those who need the food or hygiene items can get them “no questions asked.”

People can drop off donations at either location. Lapp said they should bring the food to the front desk so staff can check expiration dates and seals before putting it out.

Lapp said the best foods are those that are easy to prepare, such as chips, microwavable soups, snack cups and tuna packs. She discourages items that require more to prepare, like canned vegetables or large soup cans.

Items donated must be nonperishable.

They are also in need of hygiene items. They prefer travel size items, such as people get at hotels. They also need prepackaged toothbrushes, small toothpastes, packages of wipes and diapers.

The library asks that people not bring hand sanitizer because it can explode in the heat.

“We have been really blessed to have a full pantry during the pandemic.” Lapp said.

She added there is very much still a need. Currently, they are having to restock twice a week because people are using the items.

She encouraged the community to donate to help others in the community.
