Habitat for Humanity awarded grant for resurfacing of playground
Simmons First Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity to resurface a playground within its Partnership Village neighborhood in the Glory Cove cul-desac in Benton.
This area is comprised of more than 60 Habitat homes and the playground has been there for over 10 years.
Mulch has been donated the last couple of years from Mccallister’s Landscape Supply in Benton, but this grant will pay for the resurfacing of the playground with engineered wood fiber, which is a softer and safer material that will last the lifetime of the playground.
This mulch also meets Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) requirements and the playground will also have additional curbs and sidewalk installed to be more handicap accessible.
“We are so thankful for Simmons First Foundation and the awarding of this grant to help improve the appearance, safety, and accessibility of our playground,” said Executive Director Stephanie Griffin. “Years ago the playground was built because there was one extra lot in the neighborhood that Habitat could not build a house on and so the Board of
Directors decided to build a playground so that the area residents could have a safe place for their kids and grandkids to play right here close to where they live.”
Habitat for Humanity builds homes for low-income area residents who meet specific income requirements and these “partner families” then purchase the home from Habitat with a zero percent interest loan.
The next homeowner application meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. April 4 at the Gene Moss building at Tyndall Park. For more information, call the office at 501-315-5434 or find more information on their website at www.habitatsalinecounty.com.
