That beautiful crooked smile

-

TOGO HAD BEEN THROUGH a lot before he came to the Sanctuary. Living outdoors in Arizona, and only occasionally getting fed by kind people, Togo showed up one day in his usual neighborhood with a bad injury.

His jaw had been fractured by a gunshot wound.

Tuba City Humane Society (a Best Friends Network partner on Navajo Nation) took Togo in and got him to a vet, who was able to wire his jaw in place. Because he’d need months to recover, plus additional surgeries to get everything back in working order, Togo moved to the clinic at the Sanctuary. During his stay there, he was nervous around people, but whenever he saw another dog, he would perk up, wanting to play.

When he left the clinic with a crooked — but healed — grin on his face, Togo got not one but three doggie roommates. Eventually, he started warming up to people, approaching and sniffing them as his companions provided distraction. He’s still shy, but he’s learning how to trust and interact. And that crooked smile sure helps win over new friends.
