Welcoming new arrivals

-

EIGHTEEN DOGS HERE, 19 there, then another 15. And on it goes. Dogs and puppies of all shapes and sizes arrive at the Sanctuary by the van-full, on lifesaving transports from shelters and rescue groups in need of help. When intakes are high and there aren’t enough adopters, it can make a world of difference to move pets out of shelters to places where they have a better chance of being adopted.

When a shelter in Arizona sent out an urgent call for help, preparations began immediately. The shelter was at capacity, and more animals were coming in. Without any other options, the staff would have been forced to kill healthy dogs and cats just to make room. But no one was going to let that happen.

Team leads at the Sanctuary in Dogtown started making lists of the animals they could help, setting up space for them and going back to fit more names on those lists. When a van arrived one evening with 33 pets, everything was ready. The dozens of wagging tails, each animal a giant step closer to being home, made the preparations and the long hours on the road all worth it.

For many of the new arrivals, the Sanctuary will be a quick stop on their way to a new family. Of course, if any of them need a little extra time before being adopted, they’re welcome to stay right here, in Dogtown.
