I did it!

Ordinary laundry room cabinets get a game-changing facelift. Now, they’re a where a family can stow coats and sit to tie shoes. A set of cabinets in Stephanie Abbott’s Houston-area home was in the right spot for a mudroom—at the door to the garage. But with two kids under the age of 5, she needed a better setup for her family’s grab-and-go routine. “At first I was looking at ripping out the existing cabinets to build a mudroom from scratch,” Stephanie says. “Then I realized those cabinets were the perfect starting point.” She removed the doors, drawers, and countertop, then spent three days modifying the cabinet frames and building wooden bins.

“I knew this update would have a big impact on our daily lives,” Stephanie says. “Having a place to sit down and to store shoes makes life easier.”
