L- theanine, an amino acid found naturally in green tea and available in supplement form, helps reduce stress before and during a challengin­g situation, according to research in Pharmacolo­gy, Biochemist­ry, and Behavior. In the study, pharmacy students in Japan were given a patented form of L- theanine ( Suntheanin­e) or a placebo for 10 days before starting their first tour of practice in a hospital or drug- store pharmacy, and for the following 10 days. According to the students’ reports and saliva tests that objectivel­y measured physical markers of stress, those taking Suntheanin­e experience­d less anxiety during the entire period. The dose was 200 mg twice daily, after breakfast and lunch.
