Celebrating summer

A week of recognitions and summer fun ideas

- By ANNA GUTIERREZ Staff Writer

Friday was officially the first day of summer, but, in Texas, summer can start as early as April. We know the 100 degree days are inevitable. So, maybe it’s fitting that June 23 is officially known as National Hydration Day.

This day was started to honor Coach Victor Hawkins and the contributions he made toward athlete health, safety and success. Safetgard Corporation founded this day to increase awareness of the importance of proper hydration to athletes everywhere.

June 24 is Swim a Lap Day. It is the unofficial holiday that celebrates swimming and encourages swimming as a form of exercise. People have been swimming for thousands of years. Competitive swimming in Britain began around 1830 and was part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

National Catfish day is observed on

June 25 each year. We know all about catfish here in Texas. Fried is best, in my opinion. I'm sure everyone has their own recipe they think is best, so get together with friends and family to fry up some catfish and see whose recipe is the winner.

If fried catfish isn't your thing, maybe you'd like it better cooked on the grill “en papillote”. You can celebrate National Parchment Day on June 26 by wrapping your favorite protein or veggies inside of a parchment pouch. This method enhances flavors without fat or oils and is a good way to keep food moist during cooking.

With the heat bearing down on us, celebrate National Sunglasses day on June 27. Not only do sunglasses make you look cool, they also protect your eyes from the dangers of the sun's rays.

As we're here in Texas dealing with the heat, let's think of somewhere cooler and celebrate National Alaska Day on June 28. This date recognized the largest state to join the union, which is home to the highest mountain peak in the United States, Mount Denali. Share your pictures with us and use #Nationalalaskaday on social media.
